Two walls in downtown Burien just became a whole lot more beautiful – and valuable – thanks to French Artist Youri Cansell (aka “Mantra Voz”) – one in the Art Alley behind SW 152nd Street and another on a wall outside of Phoenix Tea in Olde Burien (click images to see larger versions):

The 12’ x 16’ mural in Olde Burien – of an Osprey – was commissioned by local resident John White, and painted on Sunday, Aug. 31.

“This little corner of Olde Burien has just gotten way more awesome!” said Virginia Wright of Phoenix Tea. “Our thanks once again to John White, for making it happen.”

“As with all ‘graffiti’ art it is standard for the artist to accept that his art will be covered by future artists,” White added. “Not so for our artist Mantra Voz –  you see in his home of both Germany and France his work has become so popular that no one paints over it – in fact it is now illegal to cover his work. But the story gets more fantastic – the city of Venice, Italy has appointed him as ‘residence artist’ – they house him, pay him to paint in various sites around the city, so you see…Olde Burien now has a very famous painting even now worth $25K and will grow priceless over time…”

“We went by this morning (Sunday) and this fellow paints from memory…and also by using spray cans!” said Guy Harper. “Sure looks good from a distance and also close up.”

Art alley? Where is Art Alley?

The Art Alley is a project of the B-Town Beat, Burien’s music and art walk. The Art Alley is between 4th and 6th Ave SW on 152nd Alley. Sam Sneke is the curator, and he was the one who originally coordinated with the artist to work on the alley.

Correction: Mantra Voz will be the Artist in Residence in Vienna, Austria, not Venice, Italy.

These are great. Do they follow theme or are they all random?

The murals in the Art Alley are Mantra Voz’s personal art. The Osprey in Old Burien is a specific commission from John White, with creative input from Virginia Wright.

I LOVE the new osprey mural! Thank you John White! It would be great if Burien could build a couple osprey platforms to replace the two cell tower nests by 509 that Ospreys had babies in for three years. Last year the Port excluded the nests with wires preventing the Ospreys from breeding there. A male Osprey hung out in one of these towers from April to August, trying to make a nest. Very sad.
