In order to construct its third runway, the Port of Seattle purchased properties within the Runway Protection Zone (RPZ), leaving vacant land to be redeveloped in accordance with FAA regulations. The 160-acre area within the City of Burien underwent more than a decade of studies and planning before becoming the ready-to-develop NERA space with stormwater facilities and park areas that exist now. Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting celebrates the completion of NERA’s first phase. “The work done here will aid salmon recovery in our region by enhancing base flow, regulating temperatures, and improving fish passage in Miller Creek,” reads an announcement. “It also provides water quality treatment and flow control for fifty acres of existing and future development. And the project provides recreational access in the form of trails, park benches, picnic and viewing areas, and signage as well.” Funding for the project came from the City of Burien, Port of Seattle, the King County Parks Levy, Washington State Department of Ecology’s Water Quality Retrofit grant program, and the Washington State Department of Commerce’s Community Economic Revitalization Board’s grant program. 1. HELLO….you are right under the 3RD RUNWAY. Children using this park should bring hearing protection. The best creeks and rivers to fish are the ones that man has not tried to regulate the flow.
