Highline Public Schools has teamed up the King County Library System (KCLS) to participate in the ‘Big Read,’ a program of the National Endowment for the Arts.

KCLS distributed 800 free copies of “The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears” by Dinaw Mengestu to people in SeaTac, White Center, and Tukwila. Nearly 200 Highline students attended a free community production based on the book performed by Book-It Repertory Theater. Afterwards, students participated in a post-performance discussion.

Later, twelve teachers, staff, and administrators met to discuss the book and were inspired to form a regular book discussion group.

In total, 40 different Big Read events took place in our community over a two-month period.

Through grants, the Big Read supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide programs that encourage reading and the participation of diverse audiences. The work broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.
