Dr. Arun Jhaveri, Burien’s first mayor, announced Wednesday (Jan. 27) that he will run for Congress.

Jhaveri told The B-Town Blog this morning that he intends to run for the 7th Congressional District seat currently held by Jim McDermott.

McDermott recently announced he will retire from Congress when his current term expires in January 2017. McDermott was first elected to the seat in 1988.

Jhaveri has been a Burien resident for 45 years. He is a physicist and former Boeing engineer. He worked for the federal government as a regional technology manager from 1982 to 2006.

Jhaveri served as Burien’s first mayor from 1992 to 1998.

He will formally announce his candidacy in early February.

Arun is a bright and thoughtful person. I would be pleased to have him in the congressional seat for the 7th District. Bravo, Arun!

  2. Peter says:

I have no idea of this guy’s platform or politics. Something tells me anyone* would be better than McDermott. What does Jhaveri stand for?

*almost anyone – Kshama Sawant would probably be worse.

  3. Carol says:

Arun Javari has proven to be thoughtful, compassionate, highly responsible and competent in his work to incorporate and shepherd Burien into cityhood. His calm and collaborative manner would be a welcome relief from the rancorous partisanship we currently ‘enjoy’. Where do I sign up to help, Mr. Javari?

  4. Ken says:

Arun and Kitty are still my two favorite city councilmembers of all time. Arun would make an awesome congressman. I don’t even care what political party he prefers; Arun has my vote!
