He succeeds Michael Lafreniere, who retired at the end of November, 2015. Throughout his career, Steve has played an essential role in the management and maintenance of park facilities and operations, the city said. He has led or overseen several park projects in Burien including the Burien Toyota and Chevrolet Dog Park and playground renovations at Dottie Harper Park. Steve also had the pleasure of managing for the city the award winning shoreline restoration project at Seahurst Park – the largest shoreline restoration in Puget Sound history. “Steve’s ability to work successfully with a variety of individuals and stakeholders, his passion for community involvement, and his environmental ethic make him a great choice” City Manager Kamuron Gurol said. Steve grew up in the San Francisco area and is a graduate of Humboldt State University, in Arcata, California, where he received his Bachelors of Science in Forestry. Outside of his service to the Burien community, Steve and his wife of 24 years enjoy spending time on their ranch raising horses, dogs, cats, and chickens. The Director leads, plans, organizes and directs the activities and responsibilities of Burien’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services including recreation programs, arts and culture, public parks programs, and facility and grounds maintenance. The City of Burien is a vibrant and creative community, where the residents embrace diversity, celebrate arts and culture, promote vitality, and treasure the environment.
