New Advertiser Straight Blast Gym, an international MMA/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) association, is proud to announce its new location in the heart of Burien, and will be celebrating with an Open House on Saturday, March 26.

Jiu-Jitsu – a term meaning “the gentle art” — incorporates grappling techniques, balance, and agility to overcome physical threats and promote full body awareness. The gym offers both ongoing courses and one-time seminars for all ages.

In addition to general Jiu-Jitsu instruction, the academy offers courses focused on bully prevention, women’s self-defense and competition preparation in a safe, family-friendly setting.

Students are often so engrossed in the technical aspects of jiu-jitsu that they don’t realize what a great cardio and strength workout they are getting. Students notice improved balance, endurance, agility and reflexes with regular practice. Jiu Jitsu also provides students with increased confidence, an outlet for stress and a sense of mind-body connection.

“A martial arts school can be a powerful force in the community,” Coach Jei said. “We increase kids’ discipline and confidence, help empower women, and provide people of all ages, shapes and sizes with a healthy and sustainable hobby.”

SBG Burien focuses on fine tuning the fundamentals and understanding how the human body moves by itself and in relation to another person. It’s a science as much as it is an art. Coach Jei calls it “movement with a purpose.”

“While self defense proficiency is an obvious benefit of BJJ training, the practice also teaches you about fundamental postures, leverage, distance management, moving in relation to another person, and how to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations,” he added. “Beyond the physical component, we also focus on the meditative aspects of the art. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has improved my wellbeing immensely. Not only have I got this great skill to show, but I’m more mindful, grounded and confident.”

“After teaching Jiu-Jitsu in West Seattle for three years, I’m excited to bring this community to the Burien area,” Jei said. “Straight Blast isn’t just a martial arts studio, we think of our members as family. We really get to know each other through our practice and that sense of community is something that keeps people coming back. One of the main focuses of SBG Burien is to give back to the local community by volunteering, donating, and hosting drives for local organizations.”

Straight Blast Gym Burien is located at 115 SW 153rd Street (map below) – next door to The Greek House – and offers classes for kids and adults, Monday through Saturday. The academy will host an open house and meet-and-greet on March 26th. Staff will demonstrate techniques, answer questions, and give away a few promotional memberships. Food and drinks will be served.
