75-year old Melvin Gruschow was the oldest finisher, with a time of 33:11. Highline Public Schools Superintendent Susan Enfield finished 121st, with a time of 27:12. buntleythebearbrattrotTwo other local celebs – Buntly The Bear (of the Highline Bears!) and King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg, also finished. And of course we can’t forget “Bret the Brat” (aka Ian Field), who came in 205th (every runner who finished before him was entered to win two free tickets to anywhere Alaska Airlines flies). 2010 Brat Trot winner Matt Parker (running shirtless as usual) came in fifth, with a time of 18:11 (his winning time in 2010 was 18:00). This annual grassroots fundraiser for the Highline Schools Foundation packed the streets of Olde Burien under sunny, gorgeous skies on Sunday, Oct. 2. This year’s 5K had at least 750 participants, and the 5K route goes from Olde Burien around Lake Burien: burien-map-brat-trot-2014 Here’s a slow-mo video of the start of the race – can you spot yourself?

  1. Was it really important to use spray paint to mark the children’s turn around? Couldn’t chalk be used so that it would not be on our street permanently?
