KING5 is reporting that a bold thief stole a 90-year old woman’s purse in broad daylight in the parking lot of the Normandy Park Market on Thursday, Nov. 17.

The woman was loading her car after doing grocery shopping at the Normandy Park Market just after 1 p.m. on Thursday.

In the surveillance video below, you can see her unloading her groceries into the trunk of her car when a man drove up, parked his SUV, approached her and said, “I’ll get that for you.”

The woman thought that perhaps the stranger was going to help her.

Instead, he snatched her purse and took off:

My deepest concerns for this woman. I hope she has someone to help her as she recovers from this crime.

‘Bold’ is not the term I would use for this creep. Watch the video a few times and you can see how planned this theft was. One wonders how many other times he has gotten away with such a theft. I certainly hope they catch him. Though one sadly knows it will probably do this victim little good.

Can’t authorities zoom in on the license plate of the vehicle?

Here are some ideas for better security/defense in our age of ‘forget respect, do whatever you can get away with.’
    1. Install security entrances at mall parking lots. Smaller lots could install cameras at entrances to read license plates.
    2. up-grade security cameras and placement. Many were installed simply to ward off theft by their presence. They have little influence over crooks today. But there are better cameras which, with better placement and time/date monitoring are really useful.
    3. Get in the habit of accepting offers by the check-out staff to help you with taking your items to your car. This will not only help you, but will provide more staff monitoring the parking lot more frequently. Malls should definitely be offering such assistance.
    4. Have free classes for everyone on how to protect yourself. How to not be a sitting duck for those who are on the prowl.

BTW – The same day this happened, I saw a young man coming out of the Burien Safeway pulling a wine bottle out of the waistband of his pants when he was less then 10 steps away. He had no fear of me or anyone else seeing him. He was a good looking high school age ‘boy’ in good quality clothes with a clean-cut look. I saw no way to either stop him or get someone to go after him before he had gotten away. What a sad state our age has come to.

Yup and when the local stores are concerned about being sued they let them (shoplifters) walk right out the doors…Just ask any large supermarket, or even drugstore…

Did anyone check to see if this person was test-driving that Rogue from Burien Nissan? Seems weird for a scrappy-looking purse snatcher to drive a brand new car….
