Dozens of crazed residents dove into the New Year at the annual Polar Bear Plunge in Burien’s Three Tree Point on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017.

What started out as a small neighborhood tradition in 2002 has turned into one of Burien’s funnest events, with people coming from all around to participate.

The winner of the much-coveted Polar Bear Plunge award this year was Andy McCurdy of Auburn, who took home the prize after showing much exuberance – both in and out of the cold water – while wearing a Seahawks-themed Luche Libre mask:

BTB Founder/Publisher Scott Schaefer shot this video, which was broadcast live at the time on our Facebook page:

And here’s a point-of-view GoPro clip of former South King Media Intern Sterling Smith, who braved the waters in costume as a Baby New Year (along with Father Time of course); be sure to watch the slow-mo replay closely for the hilarious faces made as the cold water hits:

Also, here’s a great video shot and edited by Cameron Johnson, a proud grad of Highline High School and freelance videographer from Burien who recently returned from Chicago:
