Highline Public Schools holding meeting on graduation requirements tonight

Highline Public Schools will be holding a series of public meetings about upcoming changes in graduation requirements, with the first to be held this evening – Monday, March 20 – starting at 6 p.m. at Mount Rainier High School.

The district said that new graduation requirements, often referred to as CORE 24, will begin with students entering ninth grade in the 2017-18 school year.

“In order to provide opportunity for students to earn the additional required credits, we must make a change in the high school schedules,” the district said in a statement. “A planning team has been working to find the best option for Highline Public Schools. After gathering information at family meetings, doing research, and learning about best practices of other districts, the committee made a recommendation for a trimester schedule consisting of five-period days.”

The district added:

We want to share the recommendation and the background; discuss the benefits and challenges that will need to be addressed; lay out the timeline for planning, collaboration, and preparing for implementation; and show you sample schedules.

Please join us at one of the following family meetings. The meetings are being held in all service areas but the information will be the same at each session. Please feel free to attend the one that best meets your schedule.  All meetings will consist of a presentation from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. with (optional) Q & A from 7:00 – 7:30 p.m.

  • Thursday, March 23:  Highline High School library
  • Monday, March 27:  Tyee Campus cafeteria
  • Wednesday, March 29:  Raisbeck Aviation High School
  • Thursday, March 30:  Evergreen Campus cafeteria

    I urge parents to go to the meetings. The mock schedules they hand out seem utterly implausible for children who are not super geniuses. They assume students can take a class for 12 weeks, pause for 12, pick up the class again for 12 weeks, have a summer off, pick up the class again …. and repeat this for four years on subjects like Math, Language Arts and World Language! Sorry, but most kids need continuity, a focus on mastery, and a class that has depth, not just a stripped down, check the box kind of class.

    I saw an email today with a very intriguing 7 period day idea. We should be exploring additional options, and not just deciding between trimesters and a block schedule that may be ok for some kids, but not good for others.

    The math of trimesters is dismal. Reduce a class from 18 weeks to 12, then bump up the class time from 56 mins per day to 68, then pretend you’ve covered a semester’s worth of content. One attendee last night asked a question about what’s the point where a child simply can’t absorb any more. 68 mins every day is just too long. This question, and many others, are worth asking at the next meetings.
