New Burien/Normandy Park group wants people to socialize in person, not online

Spend a little time on any online forum/blog or social media page and you might conclude that people only love to argue and basically don’t like anything very much.

But a group of Burien and Normandy Park residents have decided that fussing and fighting is no way to run a community and have organized several events designed to have people talk to each other, get acquainted and be reintroduced to the ancient art of conversation.

The new group – the Burien-Normandy Park Social Group – came from a simple question proposed by a Nextdoor Neighborhood Forum user:

“Not sure if anyone has tried to do this, but here is an idea. What if we as Nextdoor Forum users were to get together to meet each other personally in a low-key environment? Just meet to have a meal together. Something like a ‘bring your own dish’ lunch?”

That simple question brought 177 replies, and other posts sprang from it. Several forum users started volunteering to help create a couple of potlucks to get the idea off the ground. An informal group met, planned two potlucks, showed up to set up tables and make coffee, and 85 neighbors got together at the two events to meet each other over delicious dishes people are still requesting the recipes for.

The group uses community potlucks, game nights and other events as a means for people to connect. It isn’t limited to Nextdoor Neighborhood Forum users, is not affiliated with any religious, political or other organization and doesn’t have a political agenda — in fact, people are asked not to discuss politics or other divisive issues at the potlucks, so a positive and harmonious environment allows people to get to know each other. It is simply a group of Burien-Normandy Park residents of all beliefs and backgrounds who want to get to know each other better and to bring a positive atmosphere to their community.

What is Burien-Normandy Park Social Group?
It is best to first say what the group is not:

  • It is not affiliated with any religious, political or any other organization.
  • It does not have any political agenda or religious persuasion, in fact we actually prefer those often divisive components to be left out, so as to promote a positive and harmonious environment for all to get acquainted.
  • It is not limited to Nextdoor Neighborhood Forum users.
