TODAY – Wednesday, May 10 – is the 24 hours of GiveBig – and YOU can give big to Burien Actors Theatre HERE:

Plus when you give big to BAT, BAT’s Trustees will match your gift up to $5,250!

GiveBig reminds me of a theater wish: “Break a leg.” At first, it does not sound like such a good thing, but it actually is.

The wish to break a leg comes from the theater’s Vaudeville days. Theaters would book the main act and then overbook the rest of night’s entertainment in case the main entertainment ran short. The house would “fill out the bill” with local artists who may or may not get to go on stage.

However, to get paid, the act had to go on stage. If you waited all night and did not get to go on, you did not get paid.

Legs are the vertical curtains on a stage. They hide the wings, which are just offstage, from the audience. You waited in the wings to see if you would get on stage, and hence get paid.

To get to the stage from the wings, you had to pass through, or “break,” the leg. So, to wish someone break a leg, was wish that they got on stage and got paid. Therefore, to wish that someone break a leg was a wish they be financially rewarded for their art, as opposed to waiting in the wings and not getting paid.

Please help BAT break a leg. Don’t make BAT wait in the wings on May 10. Support better live theater HERE –

Or go to and pick Burien Actors Theatre. Either way, give ’til you smile.

“Thank you for giving big to BAT!”
