The City of Burien has begun the planning process for a new Parks, Recreation and Open Space plan –otherwise known as a PROS Plan – and they’re seeking residents’ input.

Your feedback could help guide the direction of Burien parks, recreation, and cultural services and facilities for the next six years.

Every six years, the City of Burien Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PaRCS) department works with the community to update the existing PROS plan. Once adopted by the Burien City Council, the PROS plan helps guide the City’s management and development of park properties and recreation programs.

The PROS plan process is a grant funding eligibility requirement set by the State of Washington Recreation & Conservation Office. The PROS plan also helps the City fulfill the Growth Management Act planning requirements for Comprehensive Plan Elements as outlined by the Washington State Department of Commerce. It also helps the City be eligible for other state and federal grants for acquisition and development of parks and recreational facilities.

About the process
The PaRCS Department selected Beckwith Consulting Group to facilitate community engagement during the PROS planning process. This will allow City staff, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and the City Council to hear what Burien residents want in their parks and facilities as well as recreation and cultural programs.

Here are the steps in the PROS plan process:

  1. Identify existing conditions and inventory of Burien parks and facilities, as well as current service levels for parks and recreation.
  2. Gather public comments and feedback, and identify public expectations, priorities, and goals.
  3. Explore partnerships, solutions, and funding opportunities.
  4. Create an implementation strategy for the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board to review
and consider for City Council adoption.
  5. Prepare recommendations by City staff and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for City Council consideration and adoption in late 2017.
