Saturday, June 17 in Downtown Burien was the Annual Wild Strawberry Festival.
At the event, Burien citizens enjoyed a variety of different activities, including music, dance, and other performances, games, and other special events. Many local groups and organizations also set up booths that people can visit for information, giveaways, activities, or items to purchase.
The types of booths at the festival ranges from those selling handmade jewelry to churches to community theater groups and more. Dozens of local organizations and artisans ae present at the Strawberry Festival, so there is something for everyone. There are also several food trucks selling a variety of products, including the famous strawberry shortcake sold by the Burien Arts Association.
Though the many groups that are a part of the Strawberry Festival are all different, they do share a common purpose in being there: to interact with the local community and show people what a wide variety of events and opportunity exist in Burien. One group at the festival is the Environmental Science Center, which hosts a booth that has games to teach outdoor environmental education to children. They say that the Strawberry Festival is a great way to meet local families and to promote the Center’s free family programs. These programs include Open House Saturdays at Seahurst Park, held every Saturday during the summer from 10-noon where families can learn about local plants and wildlife, and the Tidepools for Tots program, held the first and third Wednesdays of each month during the summer, also at Seahurst Park.
Many other groups at the Strawberry Festival agreed that it was a great place to interact with the community. Many churches host booths at the event. One of these churches is Hope Christian Community, located at 632 SW 143rd Street in Burien. A spokesperson for the church said they came to the festival to “share the love of Jesus with the community†and to serve people at the festival through prayer, free water bottles, and face painting for the children. They also handed out flyers with information about the church and about the free soccer camp they are hosting later in the month.
Overall, the Wild Strawberry Festival is a great community event that has something for everyone to enjoy.
