At Monday night’s Burien City Council meeting, former Mayor and longtime councilmember Joan McGilton was honored with a Proclamation:

A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURIEN, WASHINGTON, HONORING COUNCILMEMBER JOAN McGILTON
WHEREAS, Councilmember McGilton served continuously on the Burien City Council from 2002 to 2013, with six years as Mayor and one year as Deputy Mayor; and
WHEREAS, Councilmember McGilton served on the King County Council’s Regional Transit Committee, the King County Solid Waste Advisory Committee, and the National League of Cities Human Development Policy Committee; and
WHEREAS, Councilmember McGilton was appointed by the Governor to the Puget Sound Action Team and was a member of the Green/Duwamish Watershed Inventory Area (WRIA 9) Forum and Chair of the Management Committee; and
WHEREAS, Councilmember McGilton was one of the founding members of Burien’s Planning Commission and was a member of the citizens group, Friends of Burien Parks; and
WHEREAS, Councilmember McGilton helped gather local, state, and federal financial and project support for the Seahurst shoreline restoration project, which removed the seawall and restored the beach to a more natural state; and
WHEREAS, Councilmember McGilton worked with other community members to establish the highly regarded Environmental Science Center at Seahurst Park; and
WHEREAS, Councilmember McGilton served the City during some of the most transformational times including the annexation of north Burien and establishment of an independent animal control service.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURIEN, WASHINGTON, DOES HEREBY ASK ALL THE PEOPLE OF BURIEN TO JOIN TOGETHER IN HONORING COUNCILMEMBER JOAN McGILTON and to thank her for her dedicated service to the entire community of Burien.
