From Elston Hill comes more great photos showing our strange smoky skies, courtesy wildfires in British Columbia being pushed our way by a southerly wind.

On Thursday morning, Vashon and Blake Island were barely visible through the smoke as Burien fisherfolk fished from the beach and boats (click images to see larger versions/slideshow):

Sunset on Wednesday night was an ooze of smoke. Smoke is so intense that surface of the sun is actually very visible, with a sunspot quite clear on the left:

Normally, one could not shoot photos of birds at midday…but the light at Noon is more like sunset light on an ordinary day. It is hot and birds appreciate dishes of water:

WEATHER
The National Weather Service extended its ‘Excessive Heat Warning’ until 9 p.m. Friday evening, Aug. 4:

…EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM PDT THIS EVENING…

* TEMPERATURE…High temperatures today will be sightly cooler but still quite warm in the upper 80s to lower 90s.

* TIMING…Through this evening.

* IMPACTS…Heat illnesses are possible with temperatures this warm.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

An Excessive Heat Warning means that a prolonged period of unusually hot weather will occur, creating a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

…and also issued an alert about the smoke:

…AN AIR QUALITY ALERT WILL CONTINUE THROUGH SATURDAY…

Smoke from wildfires is expected to remain over Western Washington through at least Saturday. Air quality on average will be unhealthy for sensitive groups. People with respiratory problems should limit outdoor activity if possible.
