Volunteers are needed for the annual ‘Community Salmon Investigation for Highline’ starts Thursday, Oct. 5:

The salmon are on their way and it’s time to begin thinking about the annual Miller/Walker Creeks salmon surveys.

The Community Salmon Investigation (CSI) was initiated in 2010 and its continued success reflects the numerous dedicated volunteers within the watershed.

“As the new Basin Steward, I am excited to contribute to the success of this program,” said Matt Goehring.

This year’s CSI volunteer training will be held on Thursday, October 5, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Normandy Park City Hall, Council Chambers. No prior experience is necessary. All you need is an interest in salmon and a desire to get involved in stewardship activities within your watershed!

To sign up for this year’s CSI salmon surveys and RSVP for the October 5th training, please take a moment to complete this short survey.

Over the next few weeks, I will be reaching out to volunteers to coordinate schedules so we can ensure that every day of the week is covered during the early October to December/January timeframe. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Also, please feel free to share this message with others you know who may be interested.

No experience needed. Sign Up for the training workshop on October 5th to participate!

Workshop details: Learn fish identification, survey techniques and routes, how to measure fish, meet your survey team, and get maps, equipment and schedules. Light refreshments provided.

Anyone who is interested in being on a team, being a team leader, or doing an occasional survey should attend.

Teams of 2-6 people will be assigned to a certain day of the week, and will be responsible for at least two people surveying on that day each week.

For the surveys, starting October 8th, volunteers will need to provide their own rain gear and wading boots – hip or chest waders.

For more information, see the CSI web page – click here to Sign Up. When you do, please be ready with this information:

  • What day(s) of the week are you available?
  • Would you like to survey every week? Or every other week?
  • Do you have family or friends who will be on your survey team?
  • Will you attend the survey training on October 5th, 5:30-7:30pm?

If you have any questions about whether this volunteer activity is right for you, please contact Matt Goehring at [email protected] or 206-263-6826.

This project is a joint effort of the City of Normandy Park, the City of Burien, the City of SeaTac, King County, the Port of Seattle, and the Miller and Walker Creeks Stewardship program.
