After the relatively light rainfall over this last weekend, Highline High School experienced water damage to eight rooms, due to a broken drain and leaky roof, the school announced Monday, Sept. 18.

Six classrooms, along with the counseling center and a portion of the library, were impacted.

“After ensuring students and staff were safe, and instruction could continue, we made the decision to keep students at school as scheduled,” Principal Vicki Fisher said in a statement. “The impacted classes have been temporarily relocated to other parts of the building.”

UPDATED AT 4:40 p.m.:

The school’s facilities team has worked around the clock to identify the cause of the leak and are currently working to fix it.

ServPro, a company that mitigates water damage, has also been working all day to clean up the water damage.

“We’re making progress on cleanup,” Fisher said. “Three classrooms will be ready for use by students on Wednesday, three others may take some time. Tomorrow we will be cleaning carpets and applying antimicrobiano.”

School will open on time as scheduled on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

Officials do not anticipate any change to tomorrow’s school schedule. However, if there is a change, parents/guardians will be notified by robo call and email in the morning.

“Student and staff safety is our number one priority,” Fisher added. “There is no danger from hazardous materials. Areas impacted by the water damage will be go through a daily, ongoing assessment to ensure student and staff safety. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 206-631-6700.”

Highline High School is slated for a major rebuild/remodel soon. More information will be shared at a Community Meeting at the school cafeteria from 6:30 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19.
