From paid Advertiser Friends to Elect Debi Wagner:

Dear Friends, Neighbors, Residents and Voters of Burien:

My name is Debi Wagner and I have had the privilege and honor of being a council member serving you for the past four years.

I am running for re-election for position #3. Since 1995 I have been serving all the people in our community and seeking environmental justice for residents in my work with Citizens Against Sea-Tac Expansion and currently with Quiet Skies Coalition. This community has received the brunt of the burdens from emissions/air quality impacts and noise problems from the Port’s operations at the airport. I have been concerned about your health and your children’s health and fighting for remedies and control of the problems. I was the council member that pushed others to support the successful action against the FAA to stop a new flightpath through the heart of Burien. It will take a strong stand and diligent work to continue to hold this industry accountable.

I have voted against all new tax increases on residents because I know how many challenges we face with our property taxes, rent increases and inflation. Small businesses are the economic backbone of our community and I know how difficult it is for them to survive. That is why I have worked hard to know their challenges, understand their needs and responded with meaningful solutions. I am happy to have participated on the council during a time when development of Merrill Gardens, Maverick Apartments and redevelopment of NERA occurred so I could be a part in development decisions to assure high quality and job opportunities for the city.

I regularly work with a local non-profit that provides services to the homeless and poor in our community. I know this population and work with them and understand what is needed to meet their basic human health and life needs. I have supported the work and efforts of many agencies inside Burien who bring help and hope to families in need.

Crime rose last year in our city by 4% and I have the same concerns many of you have about public safety. If you have seen a recent report from the FBI, you may be aware that the city of Seattle is now the number one city in the country for property crime. This spills over into Burien and this is a major reason for the increases in our area. Experts say that this increasing crime is directly related to drug use and homelessness. I am a strong proponent of treatment and recovery for individuals and I am the council member who made the motion to ban heroin injections sites in the city of Burien which I believe will concentrate additional problems inside any city where one of these sites is located. I did that because I believe public safety is the number one concern in our community and I believe you and your children have a great need to feel safe.

I am currently attending the Community Police Academy to better understand policing in the city. I am a member of Block Watch and certified by Crime Stoppers. I championed and voted to re-start the Youth Police Explorers and voted to add two new police officers without increasing taxes. I will continue to seek all opportunities for enhancement to public safety.

My children have participated in youth recreation programs and I strongly support youth activities in the city. We have begun additional youth sports programs in partnership with Highline Schools. Youth, families and all residents deserve a community recreation center that, for many years, has been promised by past councils. I will continue to seek opportunities for funding partners in the region.

I love Burien and want it to be the best place it can be for all of us to enjoy.

Thank you and I would very much appreciate your vote.
