Volunteers are needed for a Work Party at Walker Preserve on Saturday, Nov. 11:

Join your Miller-Walker Basin Steward and neighbors to restore the forest and improve the health of Miller and Walker Creeks! We will be pulling English ivy by hand to improve growing conditions for native plants. No experience is necessary, and gloves, refreshments, tools and training are provided.

We need at least 4 volunteers or the event will be cancelled.

WHY: We are removing English ivy from where it has invaded Walker Preserve, because it:

  • out-competes native trees and shrubs;
  • is heavy and can topple trees in the wind; and
  • provides a home for rats.
  • If left unchecked, ivy will destroy the urban forest along Walker Creek.

WHEN: Saturday 9:30 a.m. to noon, November 11th, 2017

WHERE: Walker Preserve Park, SW. 168th St. and 2nd Ave. SW. in Normandy Park, up the road from Normandy Park City Hall. Plan to meet at the Park entrance. Parking options include 3 spaces in the small lot at SW 171st St. and Second Ave. S.W, or on the street along SW 168th St.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please plan ahead – this park does not have a restroom.

What to bring:

  • Rain gear, dress in layers, and wear sturdy shoes.
  • Filled water bottle and gloves if you have them.

RSVP: Email or call Matt Goehring at [email protected] or (206) 263-6826 to sign up or to inquire about volunteer opportunities in Miller walker Basin.

Mark your calendar for the final 2017 volunteer work party at Walker Preserve: Dec 9th, 2017

These projects are a joint effort of the City of Normandy Park, the City of Burien, the City of SeaTac, King County, the Port of Seattle, and the Miller and Walker Creeks Stewardship program.
