LETTER: ‘In response to Mayor Lucy Krakowiak’s post…’

[EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a Letter to the Editor, written by a Reader. It is their opinion only, and it does not necessarily reflect the opinion of The B-Town Blog nor its staff:]

In response to Mayor Lucy Krakowiak’s post [1] on Thursday, I did exactly what she suggested that we all do – verify the reports about our upcoming election – but I did it some three weeks ago. Here’s what I found:

Mayor Krakowiak has been a cash contributor to the campaigns of Darla Green, Joel Manning, Patty Janssen and Debi Wagner, according to the Public Disclosure Commission.

These same four candidates have been endorsed in a mailer by the virulently anti-immigrant group Respect Washington.

Respect Washington has received major funding from a Michigan organization – U.S. Inc – which has long been listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which tracks many different hate groups all over the country. SPLC has been around for thirty or more years and has bested many of these hate groups in court. Locally, SPLC bankrupted the Aryan Nations group in Spokane several years ago.

U.S. Inc. was founded in 1981 by a wealthy Michigan resident named John Tanton, who is strongly anti-immigrant and a white supremacist, as evidenced in his own writings. SPLC has been keeping track of him and the many organizations that he funds for years.

If Mayor Krakowiak thinks it’s a good idea to support candidates who are also supported by organizations like Respect Washington, that is her right. I, however have done the research that she suggested and have come to a very different conclusion about this election.
