Highline High School’s National Honor Society is holding its fourth annual coin drive for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

“Our group is hosting this drive because while a person in the U.S. is diagnosed with blood cancer every three minutes, there aren’t any means of preventing blood cancers,” said Kim Ha.

Additionally, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the leading source for blood cancer research and support.

“We’re trying to reach a goal of at least $1300 and we’re hoping that the community can join us in making a difference,” Kim added. “While our coin drive is called Pennies for Patients, any amount donated will help us reach our goal.”

Also around the community, local businesses will have white donation boxes with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society logo for people to donate to.

Additionally, NHS also has an online donation page.

What is LLS?
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer and funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world. Their mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Our goal this year is to raise AT LEAST $1300 (only one dollar per student!)

Why are we doing this?
There are no means of preventing or early screening for most blood cancers.

  • LLS is the leading source for free, specialized blood cancer information, education, and support for patients and their families
  • LLS focuses on finding cures through partnerships with academic institutions, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical companies
  • Money collected from this drive goes to support LLS in their mission and accelerating the development of new treatments

How can staff and students help?

  • Please set a goal with your advisory class (ex. 30 students = $30)
  • Donate directly on Thursdays when students from NHS come around for collection or to the box in your advisory class
  • Spread the word! Tell family and friends about LLS and what their money will support

Stats & Facts About Blood Cancer

  • Approximately every 3 minutes one person in the United States (US) is diagnosed with a blood cancer.
  • An estimated 1,237,824 people in the US are either living with, or are in remission from, leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma.
  • Approximately every 9 minutes, someone in the US dies from a blood cancer. This statistic represents approximately 160 people each day or more than six people every hour.

Let’s get Highline involved in fighting blood cancer today!
