The air is so smoky and unhealthy today (Monday, Aug. 20), that Highline Public Schools moved all high school athletic practices indoor for the day.

Here’s an email sent out by the district:

Dear high school families,

All athletics practices for today will be moved indoors.

Today is the first day of Fall practice for all high school sports other than Football who started August 15 and students should report to their local school site as scheduled.

Site athletics staff have made arrangements for practice indoors.

Thank you.

According to the National Weather Service, an Air Quality Alert will remain in effect through midweek.

  • Wildfire smoke is the culprit behind the poor air quality.
  • Children, the elderly, and those with respiratory illnesses are at most risk of serious health effects.
  • If you experience respiratory distress, contact your doctor.
  • For the latest air quality data, visit Washington state’s air monitoring network site.
