Elston Hill went to the Salmon Heroes program on Nov. 1 at the Cove in Normandy Park, and took some great photos. “I was very impressed by the adults leading this endeavor for Fourth Graders from Highline Public Schools,” he said. “They were very patient explaining the importance of the environment on the survival of salmon in the Puget Sound. They had interesting exhibits and kept the children engaged.” The Salmon Heroes program is run by Burien’s Environmental Science Center (more info here), and included a classroom lesson, guided field study investigation, and a post-field classroom session. Students engaged in hands-on activities that explored the habitat needs of salmon – as well as the challenges to survival that salmon face – during each stage of the salmon life cycle.
