[EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a Letter to the Editor, written by a Reader. It does not necessarily reflect the opinion of The B-Town Blog nor its staff:]

Letter to the Editor,

As a resident of Burien, I am writing this letter about the generous and longtime committed, non-profit agency we have in our city – Transform Burien.

“Congratulations Burien! Transform Burien served over 18,000 meals and provided groceries and clothing to over 600 people in 2017. Let’s continue to work together to show love to people in some of their lowest moments of life.”

This past 2018 Thanksgiving, Transform Burien served over 100 Thanksgiving dinners to people in need. For privacy reasons, photos of their clients (who may be shy and don’t want to be put into the media) are not shown. And then Transform Burien served the leftovers from that Thursday feast on the following Friday. Great job, Transform Burien! Below is a photo of some of the serving team for their 2018 Thanksgiving feast this year.

Transform Burien is one of those rare and fine community non-profit services that tries to help everyone in need who comes through their doors. The organization has been in operation for 17 years in Burien and has served the homeless and poor in a loving and caring manner. Transform Burien partners with has six community service providers to offer services and information at its convenient, centralized location in the old Burien Community Center building at 14501 4th Ave SW.

It is also partners with 12 local businesses and other community service agencies and 14 community churches as well as with the Union Gospel Mission. See their website for further information: https://transformoutreach.org/about-us/

It is the only non-profit agency in the Burien that provides three hot meals a week (on location) to people in need in the community. The cooking and food are good. Transform Burien also provides or connects people in need to many other needed essential services such as: their clothing bank, their food bank, laundry services, hot showers, hair cuts, youth services, housing services, mental health services, job services, health and dental services, family planning services, domestic violence services, transportation services, legal services and community spiritual services at this one central location. Transform Burien pays rent to the city for the use of this location.

Transform Burien operates on a very, very lean budget. Almost every donation or service they receive is given back to the community. Money is not wasted on inflated administrative salaries or a large staff budget. Transform Burien’s services are donated and delivered by local resident volunteers. These generous volunteers are what has kept Transform Burien running for the last 17 years. Thank you to the local volunteers!

Winter is a cold and wet season for people in greater need for food and warm clothing. Please consider donating clothing, household goods, food, toiletries, your time and money to this worthy local non-profit organization. A list is provided on their website of items that they need. If you are looking to contribute to an agency that makes a real difference in your community in this holiday season, Transform Burien would welcome your help or donations. Steve Cox is the Outreach Director for Transform Burien, (206) 839-6620. Do stop by. Visit and see the good works that Transform Burien provides to the homeless and poor of Burien. Sit down, meet and have a meal with your less advantaged neighbors in the community. Transform Burien is currently not affiliated with the Burien City government or its grant processes.
