A Reception for renowned visual artist Jake Prendez will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at the Burien Community Center, 6-7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

The exhibit runs at Burien Arts Association’s Pop-up Gallery at the Community Center from Jan. 8-Jan.31.

Jake Prendez’s artwork mainly focuses on Chicano culture themes, activism and social justice as well as pop culture and satire. His artistic style ranges from indigenous influences, social realism, portraiture, tattoo/rockabilly esthetics and colorful urban art.

Jake was raised in Seattle but returned to California after receiving his Bachelor’s degree in American Ethnic studies from the University of Washington and a Master’s degree in Chicana/o Studies from California State University Northridge. After living and working in California for 15 years, he recently moved back to Seattle. As a youth he was placed in special education classes due to undiagnosed dyslexia. He gravitated to gang culture while in middle school. Fortunately, positive role models helped him to turn his life around. At 32, he focused his energy into painting and the art scene.

The free exhibit at the Burien Community Center is open Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

The January reception also will double as the awards ceremony for the Highline School District PTA Reflections 2018 Children’s Art Contest. The national PTA has sponsored an art contest in Visual Arts, Literature, Music, Photography, Dance Choreography and Film categories for 50 years. Meet and congratulate the 16 Highline students who will go on to the State Reflections Competition.

Mark your calendar for the 2019 Pop-Up Gallery line-up. All artist receptions are held on the first Tuesday evening of the month at the Burien Community Center. Works are for sale and benefit Burien Arts and the artist.
