Scarlet Ibis Gallery will be presenting ALTERNATE ENDINGS, ACTIVIST RISINGS, an hour-long Visual AIDS “Day With(out) Art” presentation, including six new and compelling short films repeating continuously in the gallery on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Scarlet Ibis Gallery is located at 447 SW 152nd Street, accessible through the main door to Phoenix Tea Shop (map below).

Day Without Art launched on Dec. 1, 1989 as “a day of action and mourning” in which thousands of arts institutions and organizations around the world unify together to demonstrate the power of art to raise awareness of the ongoing AIDS pandemic.

ALTERNATE ENDINGS, ACTIVIST RISINGS highlights the impact of art in AIDS activism and advocacy today by commissioning compelling short videos from six inspiring community organizations and collectives—ACT UP NY, Positive Women’s Network, Sero Project, The SPOT, Tacoma Action Collective, and VOCAL NY. The program represents a wide range of organizational strategies, from direct action to grassroots service providers to nation-wide movement building, while considering the role of creative practices in activist responses to the ongoing AIDS crisis.

ALTERNATE ENDINGS, ACTIVIST RISINGS seeks to reflect the persisting urgencies of today’s HIV/AIDS epidemic by pointing to pressing and intersecting political concerns, including HIV criminalization, Big Pharma, access to healthcare, and the disproportionate effects of HIV on marginalized communities. At a moment of growing interest in the histories of AIDS activism, ALTERNATE ENDINGS, ACTIVIST RISINGS foregrounds contemporary engagements between activists, artists, and cultural workers on the front lines.
