Burien’s Open Door Church is sponsoring a ‘Gas Buy-Down’ this Saturday, May 6, from 1 – 3 p.m.

“For two hours our church members pump gas at the gas station. Along with pumping gas we clean windshields, we give hope, and we pray for those who desire to receive prayer. At the end of pumping gas we give the customer .25 for each gallon of gas they purchased.”

What is a Gas Buy-Down?
Our church members pump your gas and wash your windows. Afterwards we give you .25 per gallon of gas you purchased.

To reach out to our community and give a smile by doing something positive in our community. To counter the concept that churches just want money to build ‘their kingdom’. To give hope to someone who may be short in funds. (We have been known to pay for someone’s gas to just surprise and bless them.)

This Gas Buy-Down will be taking place Saturday, May 6, 1 – 3 p.m. at the 7-Eleven/Shell gas station at 14605 1st Ave. S. Burien.

We also are giving away 244 tickets to watch the upcoming movie titled Champion: www.sodc.tv/championmovie

Some testimonies on previous buy-downs:

  • People need encouragement and hope regardless of the car they drive. It’s not about the money alone. Reality most people only get around $2.50. It’s about interacting with our community, It’s about sharing smiles. Its about praying for someone if they ask for prayer. It’s about giving hope. Creating an atmosphere of fun as people get gas. It’s about letting people know about our church that has as its mission to reach the disenfranchised, disappointed, discouraged, disillusioned. Its to give out free tickets to a movie, let them know about AA meetings at our church, etc
  • Testimony-An alcoholic mother who was living with a heroin addict/drug dealer who wept when we gave her $3. She said she would use it for food. We end up paying for her gas. She ended up coming to church (felt obligated-even though we put no obligation on her). She ended up leaving the boyfriend, got sober and now makes more money than I do. Her life totally turned around by us pumping her gas.
  • Testimony-A very rich looking gentleman with a very expensive vehicle was asked what was the greatest thing that has happened in his life and he said that he did not kill himself last night. One of volunteers pulled him aside and listened to his story and gave him some words of encouragement. He said he knew God had him to gas at the gas station to let him know life is still worth living.
  • Testimony-More than one person has tears in their eyes and shocked that we are giving them money back. They could only afford a few gallons so we helped them out with more.
  • Testimony-Individuals giving us back the money or adding a few dollars so we could give more money to others.
  • Testimony-Individuals shocked that a church would give money to people regardless of who they are-not defining who is worthy.
  • Testimony-Our volunteers conquering fear and then deciding to help out in other areas of ministry-thus doing more to help make our community a better place.
  • Testimony-Many people asking us if we would pray for them.
  • Testimony-People getting angry that a church is at the gas station. Even cursing. And we just be nice to them and offer the money to them anyways. Showing love when hate is shown.
