Here’s more info:

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

Highline’s NHS chapter is a student-led club that focuses on building character and leadership in high achieving students through participation in service opportunities in the community. Our group’s mission is to inspire a love of service in students and help members further develop as leaders. Previous projects we’ve done include planting trees in Mathison Park, tutoring fellow students, and helping run carnival games at Gregory Heights Elementary among many other projects. It is a very beneficial experience for students as it fosters a love of service and is a highly regarded activity on their college applications.

At our high school’s chapter, most of our students are from low-income backgrounds and so they are allowed to join without paying for membership. However, our chapter is still responsible for paying $400 to the national organization in order to maintain our chapter title. In order to do this, our club must actively fundraise during the school year.
