The awesomely-amazing 5th annual strongman/woman competition ‘Washington’s Strongest Apple’ will be returning to the Des Moines Farmers Market starting at 10 a.m. this coming Saturday, June 2.
“We will again be part of the opening day of the Marina Farmer’s Market and the new location of the north entrance of the marina, reads an announcement. “There will be an unobstructed view of the beautiful Puget Sound and the Marina Farmers Market will be right next to our contest location.”
If you’re not familiar with this event, it involves very strong men and women carrying and lifting very heavy things, straining so hard it appears that their heads might actually explode.
The top three in each weight class will qualify for the NAS Inc “National Championships,” to be held in Tunica, MS in November.
Some of the events scheduled include:
- Yoke Walk for 80 feet; 60 seconds time limit
- Trap bar Deadlift for reps; 60 seconds time limit
- Kettlebell/Circus Dumbbell clean & press for reps (KB for women; Circus DB for men); 60 seconds time limit
- Farmers walk for 160 feet (turn at 80 feet); 60 seconds time limit
- Keg Loading (4 kegs will be 10’, 15’, 20’ and 25’ away from a 50” tall box); 90 seconds time limit
And here are the Contest Rules (more info here):
- Yoke Walk: 80 feet total distance (Unlimited drops) 60 seconds time limit
Athletes will compete head to head. The Yoke will be BEHIND the start line, and the athlete will be allowed to place their body under the Yoke. On the whistle, the athlete will attempt to pickup and carry the Yoke for a distance of 100 feet. The time will be stopped when the ENTIRE Yoke “is all the way over the finish line”. Athlete with the quickest time or farthest distance wins.
- Trap Bar Deadlift for reps: 60 seconds time limit
Chalk only. No lifting suits groove briefs, tacky, gorilla grip, handball spray, or straps is allowed.
Athletes will compete head to head. The referee will say “take your grip”. On the whistle, they will attempt to deadlift as many reps as possible. The referee will give the “down” signal after the athlete has their shoulders back, hips through & forward, and both knees are locked. The athlete must then bring the Trap Bar down to the ground WITH CONTROL after every rep, and then repeat WITH ABSOLUTELY NO BOUNCING.
If an athlete does not wait for the “down” signal, that rep will NOT count towards their total.
Athlete with the highest number of reps wins.
- Kettle bell/Circus Dumbbell clean & press for reps: 60 seconds time limit
Chalk only. Wrist wraps are allowed but the thumb loop must be taken out & tucked in. Elbow sleeves are allowed. Athletes will compete head to head. The referee will say “take your grip”. On the whistle, they will attempt to press the object overhead. The elbow must be clearly locked out & held overhead until the referee gives the “down” signal. The athlete must then bring the object down to the ground WITH CONTROL then repeat. If the object is not brought down with control or dropped from overhead, he or she will be disqualified from this individual event. If an athlete does not wait for the “down” signal, that rep will NOT count towards their total. Women will use a Kettlebell and Men will use a Circus Dumbbell in this event.
Athlete with the highest number of reps wins.
- Farmers Walk: (160 feet total, with a turn at 80 feet. Unlimited drops) 60 seconds time limit
Chalk only. No lifting suits, groove briefs, tacky, gorilla grip, handball spray, or straps is allowed. If the competitor does not cross the line in the time allowed their total distance will be measured. Athletes will compete head to head. The referee will say “take your grip”. On the whistle, athlete will attempt to carry the implements for a distance of 80 feet. THEN, both competitors will make a LEFT turn around a cone at 80’ (to avoid any contact with other competitor), they will try to complete the total distance of 160 feet and return the implements to the starting position. The ENTIRE implement must cross over the finish line.
Athlete with the quickest time or farthest distance wins.
- Keg load onto a 50” tall platform: 90 seconds time limit
Chalk only. No tacky, gorilla grip, handball spray, or any other sticky substances are allowed. If an athlete is caught using these products before this event, they will be disqualified from the Keg Load event. Athletes will compete head to head. All 4 kegs will be standing on the ground 10, 15, 20 & 25 feet away from the platform. Both athletes will have their backs to the platform and one hand on it before the start of the event. On the referee’s whistle, both competitors will approach the first keg and load it UPRIGHT onto the platform (top valve of each keg must be facing up). Athletes will attempt to repeat this process until all 4 kegs are loaded. ALL KEGS MUST BE STANDING UP, AND FULLY ON TOP OF THE PLATFORM. NO PART OF THE KEG CAN BE HANGING OVER THE EDGE, OR YOUR TIME WILL NOT STOP UNTIL THE 90 SECONDS EXPIRES.
Each keg loaded will be split-timed.
Athlete with the fastest loading time of all 4 kegs wins.
