NWSOconcert-1-email The Northwest Symphony Orchestra will be holding the first concert in its 2014-2015 season – a multimedia extravaganza called “The Planets” – on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Burien’s Highline Performing Arts Center. The concert will include projected visual footage of the planets from NASA, along with photography by local astrophotographer Andy Ermolli – all combined with outstanding symphony music! NWSO will be joined by choirs from Kennedy and Mount Rainier High Schools on The Planets. The concert will open with the Prelude to Act III from Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin, followed by The Holy City by Armenian-American composer Alan Hovhaness, one of the most prolific and well known composers of the 20th century, who lived in the greater Seattle area from the 1970s until his death in 2000, and who was profoundly influenced by the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The Holy City will feature local trumpet prodigy Natalie Dungey. The concert will conclude with The Planets by Gustav Holst, a suite of seven movements, each of which is themed around one of the planets (as understood in 1914-1916, when the piece was written). “This is a great concert for the entire family,” said Music Director Dr. Anthony Spain. “The Planets is one of the most popular pieces of classical music, and alongside the orchestral performance, will be an impressive large screen display of footage of the Planets from NASA, as well as astrophotography by local photographer Andy Ermolli.” Natalie-DungeyFifteen year old American trumpeter Natalie Dungey came to international attention through her stunning performance of the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto at the National Trumpet Competition that went through the trumpet world on Youtube when she was 10. Since then she has been a featured soloist with Christopher O’Reilly on NPR’s From The Top (show #202), has premiered works for trumpet and orchestra, and been the featured soloist with orchestras and bands around the country and as far as Japan. Here are the details:
