Burien Parks & Recreation celebrated Arbor Day on Friday, April 3 by planting three Vine Maple trees at Lakeview Park – with the help of students from Sylvester Middle School.
Deputy Mayor Nancy Tosta was on hand to share some of the city’s commitments relating to trees and the environment over the past year.
Ben Thompson, Urban Forestry Specialist with Washington State Department of Natural Resources, presented the Deputy Mayor with a new Tree City Flag and acknowledged the city’s 14th year as a member.
The highlight of the event was the group of Sylvester Middle School students who embarked on a school project which focused on raising funds for adding trees to the city. The group worked with the adopt-a-park program, contributing all the needed funds to purchase the Arbor Day trees and they helped plant the trees in the park for the Arbor Day celebration.
“Thanks very much to the students (Logan Lamieux, Mira Stemen, Jeremiah Harding, Brian Phuong, and Joanne Robson) for your initiative in raising the funds to purchase vine maples and to your commitment to our city’s environment,” Tosta said. “And thanks to the City of Burien (Lisa Aumann, Steve Roemer, and Myron Clinton) for encouraging their efforts! Let’s plant more trees!!”
