The 7th annual Highline Classic Jazz Festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 3-11 p.m., and will include a wide variety of jazz styles, dancing, dining, and vintage jazz films. The new “jazz walk†format offers more music and more dining options, all at a very family-friendly price of only $20. (Cash only, please, at the door of any of the six venues on festival day, Sept. 19. Jazz fans under 18 are free!) Dancers will enjoy the beautiful wood floor at St. Elizabeth’s Church Parish Hall (1005 SW 152nd Street) as they swing to Dixieland, Swing, Hot Jazz and Zydeco bands. Just up the street at The Tin Theater (923 SW 152nd Street) filmmaker and jazz historian Joe Vinikow will present two different screenings of “pristinely preserved“ jazz films on original 16mm with commentary. The covered courtyard between 909 and 913 (909 SW 152nd Street) is the setting for World Jazz featuring Latin Jazz bands evoking the sounds of Brazil, Cuba and Puerto Rico, and other bands playing Gypsy Jazz honoring the legacy of Django Reinhardt. Meanwhile, across the street at Burien Arts Gallery (826 SW 152nd Street) you’re sure to get the Blues–Acoustic Blues, from the Delta to the Mean Streets, by some of the top pickers, singers & blues harp guys in the area. If you like your jazz standards with a little contemporary twist, stop into HomeTask (611 SW 152nd Street), otherwise known as “Cool Cityâ€, for elegant small groups in an intimate setting. A few doors west at Frankie’s B-Town Bistro (653 SW 152nd Street) catch a mixed bag of Latin Jazz, Vibraphone greats, two Earshot Jazz Vocalist winners, plus New Orleans and Vegas Rat Pack stylings. They’ve got it all! No need to follow that itinerary. The music starts at 3:00 p.m. at the Gallery and ends at 11:00 p.m. at Frankie’s. Staggered starts and ample breaks between sets means you can enjoy a lot of bands, films, and dining in a lot of places.
