This coming Memorial Day – Monday, May 30 – at 8 a.m., the Burien American Legion will hold its annual Memorial Day Service in front at the WWI memorial wall in front of Sunnydale School, located at the corner of SW 156th Street and Des Moines Memorial Drive (map below).
This will be a free event, open to all.
Originally there were over 1,000 elm trees planted along this historic roadway between Des Moines and Seattle, each dedicated to the memory of a person who perished in the First World War. Unfortunately, over the years those trees succumbed to disease or were removed in the name of progress.
In 1963, a memorial wall was constructed, inscribed with the names of the 1,428 soldiers, sailors, nurses and at least one civilian volunteer for whom the trees were planted.
