Story & Photos by Aaron Wells A 13-year old boy was robbed of his backpack – then shot at – Wednesday afternoon around 3 p.m., shortly after two nearby schools let out for the day. During the robbery, which occurred in the 15800 block of 1st Ave. S., at least one shot was fired. The victim was not injured and remained at the scene until his father arrived to pick him up. Police – including the Guardian One helicopter – were searching for the suspect vehicle, described as a red Toyota matrix with no plates. 1st Ave. S. was closed from S. 156th St. to S. 160th St. while Burien Police, along with King County Sheriff’s Detectives and K-9 Havoc, investigated the scene for evidence. Two workers from Burien/Airport Towing apparently helped: This is the latest in a series of violent crimes plaguing Burien’s youth population, a concern discussed by the Burien City Council and Sheriff Mitzi Johanknecht at Monday evening’s Council meeting. The topic was also discussed at a public event last week by incoming Burien Police Chief Ted Boe. Although Sheriff Johanknecht says she’s hopeful about the return of the County’s gang unit, she also states that she is currently working with area chiefs to form a task force targeting gangs and youth violence. Here’s video from the scene courtesy KOMO: As we gather more information, we’ll update this post (refresh page to view the latest…).
