Daily Dose of Natural Beauty: Bright Black-eyed Susan brings cheer 1

Today we re-visit the ever popular Black-eyed Susan or Thumbergia. As you may recall from our previous coverage, this plant is available in a variety of colors, but the classic is just as seen above – bright orange petals surrounding a brown/black center.

As you gaze at the vibrant petals do you feel warm? If you said ‘yes’ you are not alone, in fact research has shown a variety of common associations with colors which are useful in considering when choosing plants for your garden. When surveyed, study participants report that colors such as yellow and orange do indeed create a sense of physical warmth. In addition, orange attracts attention and will tend to draw us toward them. This suggest that planting the Black-eyed Susan at the end of a pathway will welcome visitors onward.

The bright orange of Black-eyed Susan can also create associations of happiness, bringing a sense of cheer to the garden or container arrangement. Orange also has spiritual associations and is undeniably eye-catching. Add to that their ability to attract pollinators such as hummingbirds, bees and butterflies and you have many reasons to choose Thumbergia to bring bright orange shades of happiness into the garden.
