Today we examine a single image of a common sight in the Pacific Northwest: Evergreen shrubs or trees and their dramatic and magical cones. This image shows a young green female cone early in its journey to serving as a woody seed delivery system. Not all cones are female. The male versions are quite small and often go unnoticed; they deliver the important meal pollen which is carried on the wind to fertilize the female cones which bear the ovum inside their appropriately egg-shaped cones.
An additional note of interest regarding cones is their growth pattern. If an evergreen is a Fir, the cones will sit on top of the branch, whereas if the evergreen is a Pine the cones will hang down from the branches. Tuck that piece of trivia away to stump your friends or family in the future. Even native northwesterners are often unaware of this subtle difference.
Here in the Evergreen state, you probably can’t find an easier plant to grow than evergreens and you will be stunned by the variety of choices available. In general evergreens require almost no care in the landscape, except during long periods of summer drought when you will need to water occasionally. In addition, for the healthier looking evergreens you may fertilize occasionally, though you likely will only need to do this annually. For tall growing shrubs like Arborvitae, you may wish to prune in June, as they will grow rapidly, up to 3 feet per year!
Evergreens are a versatile garden staple and can be used for privacy screens, near homes to hide foundations year-round, or used in patio pots provided the containers are large. They provide an excellent back drop to highlight showy-er bright flowers or other native species such as rhododendrons and azaleas. With the added bonus of easy care and long life scarcely any northwest garden is complete with out them.
