With bright red lip-shaped blooms, today’s feature is actually a long blooming sage that will add color to your patio or garden all summer long. Salvia “Hot Lips” is hybridized from both Autumn Sage and Little Leaf Sage and so it enjoys benefits from both cultivars. These perennials grow in hardiness zones 7-10 and are both drought and heat tolerant. Add to that their status as a #1 hummingbird attractor and you have many reasons to choose this vibrant plant. In addition to hummingbirds, it will also attract butterflies and larger bees.

A few musts for this salvia are good drainage and ample sun. They will benefit from a mid-to-late summer cleanup of spent blooms and leggy growth. Such attention will encourage new blooms as will a light application of fertilizer at this time. Late-winter pruning back to between 6”-12″ will prepare the plants to come back in late spring with fresh growth and an abundance of blooms.
