This Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at 7 p.m., the Burien Planning Commission will hold their regularly scheduled meeting to discuss the following topics.

Here are details from the city:

Flood Code Updates
The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to hear testimony about proposed changes to the Burien Municipal Code 15.55 Flood Damage Prevention and adopt Revised Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and Revised Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs).

The City of Burien participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) in regulating flood plains. As a member of NFIP the city is able to pass along insurance savings to those Burien households located within flood plains or Special Flood Hazard Areas. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) have identified floodplain code amendments that are required to be updated by the community and formally adopted by August 19, 2020.

FEMA has also revised the Flood Insurance Study for King County, Washington and Incorporated Areas. This revised study will require the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) to be revised as well. Each community will need to adopt the revised Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and FIRMs by August 19, 2020 in order to comply with the NFIP. FEMA updates the maps to reflect the most recent flood studies based on new topography and modeling as they become available. The new set of maps more accurately depict floodplain and floodway boundaries and associated information in many areas throughout King County.

Members of the public may attend the Planning Commission meeting and provide testimony.

First Briefing on Burien’s Housing Needs Assessment and Future Housing Action Plan
The Burien Planning Commission will also hear from staff about the Housing Needs Assessment, a collaborative effort among five south King County jurisdictions.

The briefing will provide preliminary baseline data about Burien’s anticipated future housing needs.

The presentation will also include information about a Housing Action Plan. Burien’s Housing Action Plan will use an equity lens to develop clear, actionable strategies to meet current and future housing needs. Planning for the Housing Action Plan will take place in the coming months and will include significant community engagement. A final Action Plan will be completed during the first quarter of 2021.
