A Severe Weather Shelter will open this Tuesday, Feb. 9. 2021 at Highline United Methodist Church (HUMC) in Burien, and organizers are seeking donations and volunteers.

The shelter will be open at least through Thursday night, Feb. 11.

“A cold weather snap is coming in the next few days,” organizers said.  “This may or may not bring much snow with it, but will bring freezing overnight temperatures, and so we are opening Burien’s Severe Weather Shelter on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. Depending on how quickly (or slowly) the weather moves through, we may extend further.”

Doors open at 7 p.m. daily (unless otherwise noted), and they close for the day at 8 a.m.

The guidelines for opening are as follows:

    • The outdoor temperature is 32 degrees F or lower for 12 hours or more for two consecutive days
    • There are three or more inches of snow on the ground for more than 24 hours

VOLUNTEERS & DONATIONS NEEDED
They are looking for Volunteers, along with some limited food & supplies, as well as monetary donations.

Organizers say that COVID-19 protocols restrict them from collecting food donations in the same way they have in the past, and also requires them to have additional volunteers.
