DESCRIPTION:A Candlelight Vigil for the “future of Eagle Landing Park” will be held on Friday\, Jan. 5\, 2024\, from 6 – 8 p.m. \nA petition has also been created. \n“Join us in honoring the future of Eagle Landing\,” organizers said. \nThis event is being organized by Burien resident John White\, who as we previously reported\, filed a lawsuit against the City of Burien to stop the demolition of the stairs. \nThe vigil will take place at Eagle Landing Park\, located at 14641 25th Ave SW\, Burien\, WA 98166 (map below). \nScan the QR code below or click here to find more information and sign the petition to save the stairs at Eagle Landing. \nCandles provided by Kannin Law Firm. \nHere’s more from organizers: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n “For years\, Eagle Landing Park has served as a beautiful preserve of nature in our community here in Burien. Now\, this waterfront sanctuary is under threat due to plans to dismantle the stairs that will make the beach inaccessible.\n\n\n “The city of Burien plans to spend an estimated $800\,000 to 1 million dollars on this deconstruction effort to close the beach. This not only represents a significant expenditure but also poses serious environmental risks. The steps taken so far have already violated a clear-cutting policy on shoreline management by removing the tree canopy on the slope. Leading to a massive risk of erosion which is to be furthered by the removal of the stairs. The stairs are integral to the slope\, supported by nine concrete pillars that stabilize the hillside. Removing them could lead to irreparable damage\, as the structure plays a crucial role in holding the sediment together. The combination of their removal and the heavy rainfall in our area may result in loose soil\, posing a significant risk of landslides.\n\n\n “What’s more concerning is that these drastic measures are being taken without an expert review of whether dismantling is necessary or if there are better alternatives available.\n\n\n “We must protect our beloved Eagle Landing Park from needless destruction and potential environmental disaster. We urge you to halt these deconstruction efforts until a proper assessment has been done by experts in this field.\n\n\n “This isn’t just about preserving access to a local landmark – it’s about safeguarding our environment for future generations while ensuring responsible use of public funds.
