SUMMARY:Walk with a Doc and Talk about Alzheimer’s on Saturday\, June 14
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \nOur next walk will be this Saturday\, June 14 at 11 a.m. \nWe’ll be talking about Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia\, specifically how we screen for it and how to prevent it. I understand this can be a tough subject to talk about\, but the more we talk about it\, the better we can manage it. \nI get asked a lot about supplements that can possibly help but as always I prefer to tie things back to lifestyle changes. That said\, if there are any vitamins or supplements you’re particularly curious about let me know! \nBe sure to check out the handout below!\nMeeting Place: Burien Town Square Park\n480 SW 152nd St.\, Burien\, WA 98166\nMeet at the large\, south end sculpture. In case of inclement weather\, we’ll meet in the lobby of the Burien library – 400 SW 152nd St STE 100\, Burien\, WA 98166 \nLeader: Dane Nimako\, MD\nAfter a 15-20 minute talk\, we’ll all walk together westward to Lake Burien Park\, and then back to Burien Town Square. \nIf this will be your first time on a “Walk with a Doc”\, please REGISTER HERE. This will also put you on the email notification list about future walks. \n\nDane Nimako\, MD \nFamily and Lifestyle Medicine Physician \nWalk with a Doc South Seattle \nHe/Him/His (Link: Why Pronouns Matter) \n\n\n\nFacebook | Twitter | LinkedIn | Instagram | YouTube | Newsletter\nInspiring Communities through Movement and Conversation \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAbout Walk with a Doc\nAccording to the American Heart Association\, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Walking is low impact and easier on the joints than running. It is safe – with a doctor’s okay – for people with orthopedic ailments and heart conditions. \nWalk with a Doc is a walking program for everyone interested in taking steps for a healthier lifestyle. You’ll take a few minutes to learn about a current health topic from a healthcare professional\, then spend the rest of the hour enjoying a healthy walk and fun conversation. It’s a great way to get out\, get active\, and learn about health from a trained professional\, instead of the internet. \nThe South Seattle chapter is run by local family physician Dane Nimako\, MD. You can find him practicing at a few different organizations around Seattle\, but he runs the chapter independently as a way of bringing health education outside clinic walls. \nGood news! There is a new Walk with a Doc chapter in North Seattle that will be meeting the first Saturday of each month\, led by child psychologist Karen Toth\, PhD. I joined their first walk at Discovery Park yesterday. Future walks may be at a different location but you can find up-to-date details here: https://walkwithadoc.org/join-a-walk/locations/seattle-washington/ \nThe Walk with a Doc program was started in Columbus\, OH in April of 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir and has now expanded throughout the world. You don’t need any special gear and there are no special rules. Walk your own pace and distance. \n\nWalk with a Doc is a separate organization and not affiliated with Walk/Bike Burien (aka “WABI”)\, but WABI loves to promote walking and is happy to let folks in the south end know about other walking opportunities in the area.

SUMMARY:‘No Kings’ rally will be in Des Moines on Saturday\, June 14
DESCRIPTION:Two grassroots organizations in Des Moines are joining a national day of protest on Saturday\, June 14\, 2025\, with a “No Kings” rally\, urging residents to take a stand against what they call authoritarian overreach and political corruption. \nThe event\, organized by Seniors for the Constitution and Indivisible Des Moines\, will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. this Saturday\, June 14\, 2025 at Big Catch Plaza\, located at the corner of S. 216th Street and Marine View Drive (map below). \nOrganizers are promoting it as a peaceful demonstration that includes live music\, free water\, signs\, and materials for participants to make their own. \nThe groups\, which together claim more than 400 active members\, are also encouraging attendees to bring non-perishable food or cash donations for the Des Moines Food Bank\, because all local food banks are struggling. \nThe rally is part of a coordinated national movement protesting President Donald Trump and his allies\, whom organizers accuse of threatening democracy\, civil liberties\, and public welfare programs. \n“No Kings” day is a response to “the increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies\,” according to event materials. The statement cites concerns about attacks on free speech\, immigration crackdowns\, erosion of court authority\, and proposed cuts to Medicaid alongside tax breaks for the wealthy. \n“We’d like to see young people and families join us\,” said one member of Seniors for the Constitution. “We’re doing this for them\, for our grandchildren and yours.” \nParking is available at the plaza\, in nearby lots\, and along side streets. Carpooling is encouraged to ease congestion. \nMore details are available at www.seniorsfortheconstitution.org.
