SUMMARY:‘Jovita Strong’ 5K fundraiser for local mom’s recovery will be Sunday\, May 3
DESCRIPTION:A community fundraiser aimed at supporting the recovery of a longtime Tukwila resident will take place Sunday\, May 3\, with the first Jovita Strong 5K at the Tukwila Community Center. \nThe event\, scheduled from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 12424 42nd Avenue South (map below)\, will benefit the nonprofit Help Hope Live in honor of Jovita McConnell\, who experienced a life altering brain aneurysm and coma in April 2025\, according to event organizers. \nParticipants are invited to run or walk in the 5K\, with registration set at $40. Organizers said proceeds will help cover ongoing rehabilitation costs that are not fully covered by insurance. \nJovita McConnell\, a lifelong Tukwila resident\, went into a coma for a month after an artery ruptured in her brain on April 28\, 2025. Two months later\, doctors identified her as being in a “vegetative state” and advised her husband\, Shane\, to plan accordingly. \n“Would she want this life? That’s what the doctors asked him\,” said Desiree Kalalau\, Jovita’s sister. “Shane told them that he would never bet against his wife. If they truly knew her\, they wouldn’t\, either.” \nMcConnell later began to show signs of recovery\, reaching milestones such as breathing on her own\, responding to touch and regaining awareness of her surroundings\, according to organizers. \nShe underwent rehabilitation in Seattle before transferring to Craig Hospital in Denver for specialized care. She has since returned home\, where her husband now serves as her primary caregiver as she continues her recovery. \n“Their patience\, compassion\, and dedication are restoring our hope\,” Kalalau said of McConnell’s care team in Denver. \nBefore her medical emergency\, McConnell was active in the Tukwila community\, serving on the city council and a fire department governance board\, and helping run a local pantry for children in need. She has lived in Tukwila her entire life. \nOrganizers said the community has already raised more than $7\,400 since February to support her medical expenses. Funds raised through Help Hope Live are tax deductible and can only be used for verified medical and related costs. \nEvent organizers said registration is available online here\, and donations can also be made for those unable to attend.

SUMMARY:Enjoy a free Walk-n-Talk down to Seahurst Beach on Sunday\, May 3
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \nBegin the month of May with a walk on a beautiful day\, down the wooded hillside to Seahurst Beach. On Sunday\, May 3\, 2026 at 2 p.m.\, our Walk-n-Talk will start at the top of the hill and walk down the service road to Seahurst Beach. \nOn the way back up\, walkers may choose either the road or the paths to get back up the hill. This road\, and the paths on the adjacent hillside\, are the “best kept secrets” known by striders and dog-walkers around town. It’s a beautiful gem of a spot! \nAt this time of year\, we’ll look for skunk cabbage in and near the creek beds. Nettles are likely popping up along the pathways and the trees are leafing out with spring green. (If we’re lucky\, we’ll spot the treasured trilliums. A real treat to see.) \n\n\n\n \nTrillium\, photo by Elston Hill. \nWalk Details:\n\nDate and Time: Sunday\, May 3\, 2026. Meetup at 2:00 p.m. Walking starts at 2:15 p.m.\nWalk-n-Talks happen rain-or-shine\, smiling and talking all the way.\nMeetup Location: Approx. 13200 Shorewood Dr. SW\, Burien WA 98166\nThere’s a passageway in the cyclone fence in the corner.) It says “MEET HERE” on the map below.\nWe do NOT meet at the “Service Entrance on 16th Ave. SW” noted on the map. IF you choose to park and wait there\, we will find you as we come around the corner from our stated meeting place.\nDirections: From Burien Town Square Park\, go WEST (toward the water) on SW 152nd St.\nTurn RIGHT and go NORTH on Ambaum Blvd. SW until SW 130th St.\nTurn LEFT on SW 130th St. (at the new Mary’s Place construction site.)\nGo up the hill\, following the road and veer RIGHT on SW 131st St.\nDrive one block to Shorewood Drive SW\, turn left and look for parking.\nMeet: at the passage in the corner of the cyclone fence.\nParking Suggestions: Parking at the site is limited and we suggest that\, if possible\, you carpool with other walkers. Since the walk starts in a residential area\, we remind you to be considerate of private property and driveway accesses.\nWalk Conditions and Time: As with all of the Walk-n-Talks\, each walker may go at whatever pace is most comfortable for himself or herself. The walk DOWN the hill on the road takes about 20-30 minutes; it is a hard-packed gravel\, full-width road. The walk back UP the hill on the road is most gradual and easiest\, taking another 20-30 minutes depending on pace. The walk UP along the trails is steeper and rougher\, but quite beautiful. It may take 30 minutes or more (depending on how many photos you stop to take.) If it has rained within a couple of days\, there may be mud in places\, so boots may be desired.\nFor those not wanting to walk back UP the hill\, we suggest that friends carpool\, leaving one car in the parking lot at Seahurst Beach\, then driving to the walk starting point. Once completing the walk DOWN\, you may then go to the car in the parking lot and drive back to retrieve the other car.\n\n\n\n\nThe road winds down toward the water under a tall canopy of trees.\nTender greens of all sorts grow along the roadside. \n\n\n\nAs we make our way down the road\, you’ll be able to see entry points to the criss-cross of the North Nature Trails throughout the ravine. Once at the shoreline\, walkers can enjoy some time at the beach\, then the walk will continue back UP the hill. \nWalkers may ascend on the easier\, more gradual service road. \n\n\n\nFor those wanting a more rugged walk\, they can climb the hill on the maintained\, sometimes muddy\, sometimes bridged creek-crossing trails. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s so close to the middle of town\, yet so quiet\, so green\, so much of nature in one spot. It’s a treasured\, emerald getaway just minutes from Town Square. \n\n\n\nHere’s a map from the City of Burien showing our meeting place\, the purple-dashed service road and the red-dashed trail (at the top of the map.) Seahurst Park Service Road Map \nQuestions? For questions\, comments and suggestions\, please contact Maureen Hoffmann at info@wabiburien.org. \n(Click on the map to see\, and print\, a larger version.) \nPhotos by Maureen Hoffmann\, except where noted.
