SUMMARY:Minimum wage rules\, economic development & more on agenda for Monday’s Burien City Council meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Burien City Council is scheduled to consider repealing part of the city’s minimum wage code\, discuss economic development priorities and review possible changes to council rules during its next regular meeting on Monday\, May 18. \nThe meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Burien City Hall (map below)\, and can be viewed live on Comcast TV Channel 21\, via Zoom here and via live-stream here. \nOne of the most closely watched items will be Ordinance No. 892\, which would be adopted on approval of the consent agenda. The ordinance would repeal Burien Municipal Code Chapter 5.15\, the city’s council adopted minimum wage ordinance. \nBurien currently has two ordinances that appear to set a higher minimum wage than state law\, creating confusion for some employees and employers about which ordinance applies and how. \nThe agenda bill says BMC Chapter 5.15 was adopted by the council and may be amended or repealed by the council. BMC Chapter 5.16\, however\, was approved by voters as Initiative 1 and can only be repealed by Burien voters. \nThe council is also scheduled to hold a joint meeting with the Business and Economic Development Partnership. The discussion is expected to focus on the 2025 BEDP work plan and next steps for implementation\, including work related to corridor vitality and redevelopment. \nDownload the full agenda packet here. \nAgenda Highlights\nPROCLAMATIONS AND PRESENTATIONS \n\na) Brain Cancer Awareness Month Proclamation: Mayor Sarah Moore\nb) Mental Health Awareness Month Proclamation: Mayor Sarah Moore\nc) FIFA World Cup 2026 Celebratory Event Activations: Chris Craig\, Economic Development Manager\, Lorraine Chachere\, Economic Development Specialist\n\nCOUNCIL REPORTS \nCITY MANAGER’S REPORT \nPUBLIC COMMENT: Notice to all participants: Pursuant to RCW 42.17A.555\, campaigning for any ballot measure or candidate in City Hall and/or during any portion of the Council Meeting – including the public comment period – is prohibited. \nBUSINESS AGENDA \n\na) Joint Business and Economic Development Partnership (BEDP)/City Council Meeting: Chris Craig\, Economic Development Manager\, BEDP Members\nb) Discussion of Burien City Council Rules of Order: Eileen Keiffer\, Acting Interim City Attorney\nc) City Council Planning Calendar: Bob Larson\, Interim City Manager
