DESCRIPTION:Local Artist Maureen Hoffmann and her exhibit ‘Italian Stone: Artist’s Muse’ will be celebrated with an Opening Reception at the Highline Heritage Museum on Friday\, May 5\, 2023. \nHosted by Burien Arts\, Hoffmann’s reception will run from 6 – 7 p.m.\, and her art will be on exhibit at the museum from May – June\, 2023. \nA second reception for Artists United will run from 7 – 8 p.m. \nAdmission to both receptions is free. \nHere’s more info on Hoffmann\, courtesy Burien Arts: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPulling from her 60\,000 photos taken in Italy over 15 years\, Maureen has combined photos with graphic overlays for one-of-a-kind monoprints. Her works include images of Milan\, Florence\, Venice\, monuments\, cobblestones\, manuscripts\, and textiles. \nA graphic designer for forty-five years (forty of them with her own business)\, Maureen works both independently and collaboratively. Her clients include children’s book writers\, hospitals\, accountants\, architects\, consultants\, museums\, contractors\, rag merchants\, lighting designers\, engineers\, copywriters\, food brokers\, and insurance companies\, among others. She is also a web designer. \nNamed Burien Citizen of the Year\, 2013\, Maureen founded and runs Walk/Bike Burien (WABI )\,  a program of guided walks and rides around town. DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \nPlease plan to join the WABI Weekday Walkers for a scenic forest walk on Wednesday\, May 17\, 2023 at 9 a.m. in Walker Preserve\, a little-known gem in Normandy Park. \nWe’ll follow the trail as it winds through the preserve and down side-trails to Miller and Walker creeks. While resident trillium have come and gone\, there are plenty of other flowers and wildlife to enjoy. \nThe total distance is about 1.6 miles\, with moderate down-and-up hills on the side-trails. You may want to bring hiking poles to assist with balance. At one point we’ll need to traverse a tree that has fallen over the trail\, but nothing too difficult. Parking is in a small lot at the corner of 2nd Ave SW and SW 171st\, with additional street parking nearby. \nDate: Wednesday\, May 17\, 2023\nTime: Meet 5-10 minutes before 9:00 so we can start walking at 9:00 am.\nMeeting Place: Walker Preserve\, Normandy Park (Note that this year we will meet near the entrance to the park\, not at City Hall\, as was done in past years.)\nDirections: From Burien\, drive south on 1st Ave S and turn west on SW 171st St (in Normandy Park). (You will see a small sign pointing to Cove and City Hall.) Take the first right at 2nd Ave SW. Parking is in a small lot immediately on the right and also along the street. \n \nVolunteer Bridge in Walker Preserve \n\nFun facts: Is it Miller Creek or Walker Creek? Both! The creek you cross on the footbridge is Walker Creek\, but the creek you can catch glimpses of from the Walker Preserve trail is actually Miller Creek\, the same creek that comes out at the Normandy Park Cove. Miller and Walker Creeks run roughly parallel at this point\, and Walker Preserve is mostly on a ridge between the two creeks. DESCRIPTION:Help Highline High students at the annual Pirate Feast Fundraiser\, which will be Friday\, May 19\, 2023 at the Burien Community Center from 6:30 – 10 p.m.  \n\n\n\nHighline High School Booster Club organizers promise a delicious taco bar\, great raffle items\, and fun games to support our current and future Highline High Pirates. \n\n\n\n“Our students need more support than ever before\,” organizers said. “More than 70 percent of Highline’s 1.400 students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our athletics departments rely upon donations to do more for our athletes and club members.” \n\nSeeking Donations\nOrganizers are also asking you to please consider donating one or more items or services to be included in their raffle baskets. \n“We appreciate any donation! DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are needed to join your Miller-Walker Basin Steward\, City of Normandy Park staff\, and local community on Saturday\, May 20\, 2023 to remove ivy and make your local trails and creeks better for people\, fish\, and wildlife. \nThis event will run from 9:30 a.m. – Noon at the Walker Preserve Trailhead. \nNo experience is necessary\, and gloves and tools are provided. \nPlease sign up below: \nwww.kingcounty.gov/miller-walker \n\n\nWHEN: Saturday\, May 20\, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.\nWHERE: Meet at the Walker Preserve Trailhead at Southwest 168th St & 2nd Ave Southwest\, Normandy Park\, Washington 98166 (click for map).\nIMPORTANT NOTE:  Please plan ahead – Walker Preserve does not have a restroom.\n\nWhat to Bring:\n\nGardening gloves/work gloves (we will have some available to borrow)\nClosed-toe shoes are required! (ex: sturdy sneakers\, rain boots\, hiking boots. No sandals\, heels\, or flats)\nLayers of clothing that can get dirty\nLong sleeves and thick leg coverings to protect against thorny plants (shorts or capris are not recommended)\nRain gear -OR- sunblock and a sun hat (be sure to check the weather)\nFull water bottle\nSnacks\n\nCOVID-19 Considerations & Protocols:\n\nWe want to keep everyone safe.
