SUMMARY:Begin September with a Walk-n-Talk to Seahurst Beach on Sunday\, Sept. 3
DESCRIPTION:Let’s begin the month of September this Sunday\, Sept. 3\, 2023 with a walk down the wooded hillside to Seahurst Beach. \nOur Walk-n-Talk will start at the top of the hill and walk down the service road to the Marine Science Center at the north end of Seahurst Beach. \nWe’re right at the shift from Summer to Fall and the paths above Seahurst Beach ought to be beautiful. We’ll likely see some trees beginning their change in color\, as the days have become cooler. This road\, and the paths on the adjacent hillside\, are the “best kept secrets” known by striders and dog-walkers around town. It’s a beautiful gem of a spot! \nWalk Details:\n\nDate and Time: Sunday\, September 3\, 2023. Meetup at 2:00 p.m. Walking starts at 2:15 p.m.\nWalk-n-Talks happen rain-or-shine\, smiling and talking all the way.\nMeetup Location: Approx. 13200 Shorewood Dr. SW\, Burien WA 98166\n(There’s a passageway in the cyclone fence in the corner.) See the map below.\nDirections: From Burien Town Square Park\, go WEST (toward the water) on SW 152nd St.\nTurn RIGHT and go NORTH on Ambaum Blvd. SW until SW 130th St.\nTurn LEFT on SW 130th St. (at Lakeside Milam)\nGo up the hill\, following the road and veer RIGHT on SW 131st St.\nDrive one block to Shorewood Drive SW\, turn left and look for parking.\nMeet at the passage in the corner of the cyclone fence.\nParking Suggestions: Parking at the site is limited and we suggest that\, if possible\, you carpool with other walkers. Since the walk starts in a residential area\, we remind you to be considerate of private property and driveway accesses.\nWalk Conditions and Time: As with all of the Walk-n-Talks\, each walker may go at whatever pace is most comfortable for himself or herself. The walk DOWN the hill on the road takes about 20-30 minutes; it is a hard-packed gravel\, full-width road. The walk back UP the hill on the road is most gradual and easiest\, taking another 20-30 minutes depending on pace. The walk UP along the trails is steeper and rougher\, but quite beautiful. It may take 30 minutes or more (depending on how many photos you stop to take.) If it has rained within a couple of days\, there may be mud in places\, so boots may be desired.\nFor those not wanting to walk back UP the hill\, we suggest that friends carpool\, leaving one car in the parking lot at Seahurst Beach\, then driving to the walk starting point. Once completing the walk DOWN\, you may then go to the car in the parking lot and drive back to retrieve the other car.\n\n\n\n\nThe road winds down toward the water under a tall canopy of trees. \nAs we make our way down the road\, you’ll be able to see entry points to the criss-cross of the North Nature Trails throughout the ravine. Once at the shoreline\, walkers can enjoy some time at the beach\, then the walk will continue back UP the hill. \nWalkers may ascend on the easier\, more gradual service road. \n\n\n\nFor those wanting a more rugged walk\, they can climb the hill on the maintained\, sometimes muddy\, sometimes bridged creek-crossing trails. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s so close to the middle of town\, yet so quiet\, so green\, so much of nature in one spot. It’s a treasured\, emerald getaway just minutes from Town Square. \nHere’s a map from the City of Burien showing our meeting place\, the purple-dashed service road and the red-dashed trail (at the top of the map.) Seahurst Park Service Road Map \n\n\n\nQuestions?\nFor questions\, comments and suggestions\, please contact Maureen Hoffmann at info@wabiburien.org. \n

SUMMARY:Outboard boat racing returns to Angle Lake weekend of Sept. 9-10
DESCRIPTION:The weekend of Saturday\, Sept. 9 and Sunday\, Sept. 10\, 2023\, the Frank Hansen Memorial Regatta – featuring exciting outboard powerboat racing – will return to Angle Lake in SeaTac. \nThis free event is hosted by the Seattle Outboard Association (SOA) and produced as a SEAFAIR Community Event in partnership with the Angle Lake Shore Club. The event is sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association (APBA)\, of which SOA is an affiliate. It’s our own mini version of the historic Seafair Hydro Races! \nThe weekend-long\, free event will feature competitive racing of both hydroplane and runabout style boats from the Stock\, Modified\, Pro\, and Junior categories. This driver training program introduces race enthusiasts to outboard racing offering a driving class from the experienced SOA racers\, and hands-on exhibition runs in a race ready hydro. The New Folks in Boats participants will be spread out through the race schedule and will fill gaps between heats. Spectators have an opportunity to meet the racers\, including up-and-coming stars of the future\, and legendary drivers from the past. Access to the race pits is available to anyone wearing closed-toed shoes\, after signing an insurance waiver. \nThe Saturday race schedule will conclude the seven-event series of the 300ss Hydroplane NW Tour. The Seattle Outboard Association is an affiliate through APBA (American Powerboat Association) and is a proud boat racing club that started the careers of professional hydroplane drivers Chip Hanauer\, JW Myers\, Greg Hopp and the 2023 National Points Champion and Seafair Gold Cup Winner J Michael Kelly! More info at www.SeattleOutboard.org. \nFrank Hansen\, retired airline pilot\, served 16 years as City of SeaTac Council Member\, including three terms as Mayor. Frank was SeaTac’s first mayor and is still considered by many to have been our best. As a longtime member of the Angle Lake Shore Club\, Frank enthusiastically supported the club’s ongoing efforts of sustaining long held traditions on the lake and he frequently encouraging board members to consider bringing new events to the community. This encouragement motivated Shore Club Advisor\, Steve Beck\, to consider bringing hydroplane boats ‘back’ onto the lake after hearing the stories that Frank shared with him regarding races held here years ago. The annual outboard motorboat race regatta is named in honor of Frank Hansen and in recognition of the impact his legacy had on the community. More info on this race is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/3506983146283297 \nAngle Lake Shore Club is a not-for-profit community-based organization made up of residents who live on or near the shores of Angle Lake\, in SeaTac\, Washington. The club is managed by a board of elected volunteer members serving the community since 1934. More info at www.anglelakesc.blogspot.com.
