SUMMARY:Burien’s homegrown Tree Lighting returns to Economy Wiring on Wednesday night\, Dec. 6
DESCRIPTION:Every year since 1982 (minus a pandemic pause) Burien’s Economy Wiring (a longtime Advertiser) has hosted a good ol’ fashioned Christmas Tree Lighting event\, and this year’s will be held on Wednesday night\, Dec. 6\, 2023\, starting at 6 p.m. \nThis year’s event will take place in the parking lot of Economy Wiring\, located at 633 SW 148th Street (map below). \nOwners Jay and Gail Smith are pleased to continue this time-honored tradition. \n“Please come to the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Wednesday\, Dec. 6\, 2023\,” an announcement reads. \nIn a slice of small-town America charm\, the St. Francis School Choir will entertain the crowd with classic Christmas songs in anticipation of Santa Claus himself. \nThe jolly man – red-suited\, jolly as heck and white-bearded – will arrive clutching a bag full of candy canes to share\, hitching a ride with the Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department aboard their fire truck. \nAfter greeting the crowd and a few photo ops\, Santa typically leads the group in a countdown to the official lighting of the fir tree just a few feet east of the Economy Wiring building. \nIndoors\, cookies and hot chocolate are served after the tree lighting within the store\, cozily warmed by the fire inserts on display. \nThe event also includes an opportunity to share your abundance with those in need. Please bring an unwrapped toy or nonperishable food item for the Christmas Community Outreach Program. \nThis celebration has illuminated the Burien skyline for a long time now. Economy Wiring Company Founder Gwin Smith started the tradition in 1966. Over the years\, his small celebration has grown to include the St. Francis School Choir and the King County Fire District #2’s Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department. \nIn the first eight years of the tree lighting\, Gwin climbed the huge fir tree himself to install the lights and then climbed back up in January to take them down. This changed some years ago\, when the fire department took responsibility for installing and removing the lights. \nCome join your neighbors in celebrating this festive start to the holidays. \nThe event is FREE and open to all especially the young and young-at-heart! \nEconomy Wiring is located at 633 SW 148th Street in Burien:

SUMMARY:City of Burien seeking community feedback at 'Shape Your City' Open House on Wednesday\, Dec. 6
DESCRIPTION:The City of Burien announced this week that it is re-imagining the long-term future of the city through a coordinated planning effort called “Shape Your City\,” and they’re planning an Open House on Wednesday\, Dec. 6\, 2023. \n\n\n\nThe Open House will run from 6–7:30 p.m. in the Community Room (Council Chambers) at Burien City Hall/Library.  \n\n\n\nOver the last two years\, the Burien community has shared their priorities and helped develop a shared vision and high-level priorities. \n\n\n\nEarlier this year\, the Shape Your City initiative team worked with members of the community to expand this vision to build more specific strategies and solutions for the community to evaluate. \n\n\n\nThe community is invited to attend the Shape Your City Open House to provide feedback on the concepts and drafts for the following planning efforts: \n\n\n\n\nComprehensive Plan (Burien 2044)\n\n\n\nParks\, Recreation and Open Space Plan\n\n\n\nTransportation Master Plan\n\n\n\nEconomic Development Action Plan\n\n\n\n\nThe open house event is on December 6\, 2023\, 6-7:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Burien Library. Join us for food and collaborative activities for both youth and adults. Interpretation will be available in Spanish\, Vietnamese\, Oromo\, and Amharic. \n\n\n\n“We appreciate the feedback our community and advisory boards have already given\,” said Adolfo Bailon\, Burien City Manager. “We are listening to that feedback and incorporating it into the plans that will be presented this fall.”  \n\n\n\nRead more about what we have heard so far and keep an eye out for City staff at upcoming community events. There are several ways to stay involved with this initiative: \n\n\n\n\nAttend an open house on December 6\, 2023 at 6-7:30 p.m. in the Community Room (Council Chambers) at the Burien Library. \n\n\n\nWatch for other public meetings and events where Shape Your City will be on the agenda.\n\n\n\nSign up for email updates (select Shape Your City)\n\n\n\nEmail your comments and questions to syc@burienwa.gov. \n\n\n\nWatch for an online and interactive community feedback gathering tool that will be launched on the Shape Your City website in December.\n\n\n\n\nUnderstanding where people live\, work\, play\, and move around Burien is essential to the planning process. Results of this planning effort will guide policymaking\, operational plans\, and budgets for the next twenty years.  \n\n\n\nMore info on the city’s website here.

SUMMARY:Celebrate La Posada at Highline Heritage Museum on Friday night\, Dec. 8
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate La Posada at the Highline Heritage Museum in Burien on Friday night\, Dec. 8\, 2023. \nThis free holiday event will run from 5 – 8 p.m. \nLa Posada\, which translates to “The Inns” in English\, is a religious festival celebrated in Mexico\, some parts of the United States\, and other Latin American countries. It commemorates the journey of Joseph and Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a safe place for Mary to give birth to Jesus Christ. The celebration is a reenactment of this journey\, with participants processing through the streets with candles and singing traditional songs. \nThe celebration originated in Mexico in the 16th century as a way for Spanish missionaries to teach indigenous people about the Christian faith. The missionaries used the celebration as a way to explain the Nativity story and to promote Christian values. Over time\, Las Posadas became a popular tradition in Mexico and spread to other parts of Latin America. \n\nEach evening during the event\, a group of people\, often children\, will gather at a designated house and sing a procession of traditional songs called “villancicos.” The procession will then move to another house\, and so on\, until each house in the neighborhood has been visited. \n \nMore info here: https://highlinemuseum.org/event/las-posadas/ \nThe Highline Heritage Museum is located at 819 SW 152nd Street in Burien.
