SUMMARY:Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle High School holding Open House
DESCRIPTION:Without bachelor’s degrees\, low-income youth face enormous obstacles in transcending poverty. In Washington State\, the rate of college enrollment dropped 10 percent between the high school graduating classes of 2019 and 2021\, according to numbers released by the Washington Roundtable. This comes at a time when 70% of the state’s open jobs between 2024 and 2029 are expected to require some degree of schooling beyond high school. \nCristo Rey Jesuit Seattle is the only private high school in South Seattle exclusively serving students with limited economic resources. The novel approach to education provides students with rigorous academic preparation for college while they gain valuable work experience that strengthens their cognitive and social capital development\, catalyzes confidence and aspiration\, and prepares them for success in college\, careers\, and life. \nThe Corporate Work Study program is unique to the Cristo Rey program and partners with local companies to provide work placements for students. Over 35 Seattle-area businesses have already agreed to work with CRJS students\, including Amazon\, Microsoft\, Twitch\, Premera\, Costco\, PACCAR\, and more. These partnerships help cover a portion of the cost of tuition for students\, while providing valuable work experience and resume building opportunities. \nCollege enrollment and completion is the goal for all students. The Cristo Rey University Partner program includes over 75 universities and colleges across the country. These partners agree to prioritize graduates in recruitment\, provide tuition assistance\, support\, and resources\, ensuring college completion. 100% of the CRN Class of 2022 seniors were accepted into college. CRN graduates earn college degrees at twice the rate of their similarly situated peers. \n100% of families receive financial assistance and tuition for every family at CRJS will be $250 – $2\,500 or less annually. The average income of enrolled families across the Network is $41\,000. CRN students are culturally and linguistically diverse\, identifying as 98% young people of color. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpen House is Thursday\, Jan. 4\, 2024\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCristo Rey Jesuit Seattle is currently accepting 9th grade students for the fall of 2024. SUMMARY:Candlelight Vigil for Eagle Landing Park stairs will be Friday\, Jan. 5
DESCRIPTION:A Candlelight Vigil for the “future of Eagle Landing Park” will be held on Friday\, Jan. 5\, 2024\, from 6 – 8 p.m. \nA petition has also been created. \n“Join us in honoring the future of Eagle Landing\,” organizers said. \nThis event is being organized by Burien resident John White\, who as we previously reported\, filed a lawsuit against the City of Burien to stop the demolition of the stairs. \nThe vigil will take place at Eagle Landing Park\, located at 14641 25th Ave SW\, Burien\, WA 98166 (map below). \nScan the QR code below or click here to find more information and sign the petition to save the stairs at Eagle Landing. \nCandles provided by Kannin Law Firm. \nHere’s more from organizers: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n “For years\, Eagle Landing Park has served as a beautiful preserve of nature in our community here in Burien. Now\, this waterfront sanctuary is under threat due to plans to dismantle the stairs that will make the beach inaccessible.\n\n\n “The city of Burien plans to spend an estimated $800\,000 to 1 million dollars on this deconstruction effort to close the beach. This not only represents a significant expenditure but also poses serious environmental risks. The steps taken so far have already violated a clear-cutting policy on shoreline management by removing the tree canopy on the slope. Leading to a massive risk of erosion which is to be furthered by the removal of the stairs. The stairs are integral to the slope\, supported by nine concrete pillars that stabilize the hillside. Removing them could lead to irreparable damage\, as the structure plays a crucial role in holding the sediment together. The combination of their removal and the heavy rainfall in our area may result in loose soil\, posing a significant risk of landslides.\n\n\n “What’s more concerning is that these drastic measures are being taken without an expert review of whether dismantling is necessary or if there are better alternatives available.\n\n\n “We must protect our beloved Eagle Landing Park from needless destruction and potential environmental disaster. We urge you to halt these deconstruction efforts until a proper assessment has been done by experts in this field.\n\n\n “This isn’t just about preserving access to a local landmark – it’s about safeguarding our environment for future generations while ensuring responsible use of public funds. Please sign this petition today!” \n\nRead our extensive previous coverage of this issue here. \n\n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Celebrate White Center Food Bank’s new facility and mural
DESCRIPTION:From our sister site The White Center Blog: \n\n\n\nAs our friends at the White Center Food Bank bid farewell to another transformative year\, they want to express their deepest gratitude for the continuous support they’ve received\, and are inviting all to a Grand Opening Party of their new facility on Jan. 12\, 2024. \nThis free event will run from 5 – 7 p.m. at their new location at 10016 16th Ave SW in White Center (map below)\, and will include a ceremonial ribbon cutting\, guest speakers\, music\, food\, drinks and more. \n“Your commitment to our mission has made a significant impact and we’re excited to continue making a difference together in our community\,” officials said. \nThis event will also be a great time to enjoy White Center’s newest mural. \nWCFB worked with two artists – Jake Prendez from Nepantla Cultural Art Gallery and social justice artist Rafa Diaz – to create the vibrant mural. \nThey hosted community mural workshops to have community members contribute ideas on what they wanted on the mural. \n“After the sketching was done\, we invited the community to participate in the mural painting and last week the plywood covered were removed and the mural was revealed.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe mural art consists of community members from the WCFB staff\, community leaders\, and family & produce. \nThis new location will provide ample space for WCFB to grow and is centrally located along several major bus lines. However\, substantial renovations and other upgrades are needed to make the food bank’s new home welcoming and hospitable to everyone. \n“In all of this\, the White Center Food Bank is looking beyond the old models of service and working to develop new ways to nourish our community with equity\, accessibility\, and dignity as our guiding principles\,” said Randy Nguyen\, Marketing & Communications Coordinator. \n“We’re excited to open up on January 8th and have our Grand opening party on the 12th. We’re currently in the final process of moving stuff and getting situated into the new space.” \nHere are a few customers testimonials about the food bank: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n “I wish that people could see that this is more than just a place where people come only to take things away. Thank you for to everyone for this help and for this place.”\n\n\n “I come here because the food and vegetables are very fresh. This is a good place\, the staff are very friendly and respectful to everyone.
