SUMMARY:See stone houses\, a bridge and crossing signs on WABI Burien's Walk-n-Talk on Sunday\, Mar. 3
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \n\n\n\n\nPeople who live in stone houses shouldn’t throw glass.\n\n\n\nWhy do we want to cross the bridge? To see one of the three stone houses nearby! \n\n\n\nLong ago\, at the north edge of Burien\, there were people building some very distinctive homes with stones and pebbles. Welcome the month of March by joining us on the Stone House Walk-n-Talk\, to marvel at three stone wonders and cross over the Peter Western bridge. This month’s walk will take us into the Boulevard Park and Hilltop neighborhoods (starting at Boulevard Park Library and walking past Hilltop Elementary).  \n\n\n\n\nDate: Sunday\, March 3\, 2024 (Rain or shine. Give your rain gear and umbrellas a workout.)\n\n\n\nTime: 2 p.m. meet-up. Walking starts at 2:15 p.m.\n\n\n\nWho: Walkers of every level and ability\, plus friendly\, four-legged friends\n\n\n\nPlace: Meet in front of the Boulevard Park Library\, 12015 Roseberg Ave S\, Burien\, WA 98168 (map below)Why not carpool with friends from Burien Town Square Park?!\n\n\n\nDistance: About 1.3 miles\, round trip. This is a shorter walk than usual\, but there’s more of a slope to the land.\n\n\n\n\nOur Walking Route:\n\n\n\n\nMeet in front of the Boulevard Park Library at 12015 Roseberg Ave S\, Burien\, WA 98168.\n\n\n\nCross S. 120th St. and walk north along Roseberg Ave. S.\n\n\n\nSee a beautiful\, old brick house and the first of the 1945 Stone & Pebble Houses. (On this same walk in 2016\, we talked to one of the homeowners. They had been in their home for over 20 years and spoke of the Italian man that had lived across the street and helped “pick rocks” for the house when he was just a kid.)\n\n\n\nWe’ll continue along Roseberg\, then go east along S. 116th St.\, cross over the Peter Western Bridge\, then a couple of blocks further to see the 1934 Stone Block House.\n\n\n\nGo back to and southbound along Military Road S. to the other 1945 Stone & Pebble House.\n\n\n\nTurn south along 24th Ave. S.\, walk by Hilltop Elementary School.\n\n\n\nCut west onto S. 124th St.\n\n\n\nHead north on 20th Ave. S. to end up back at the Library. (Click the map for a larger view.)\n\n\n\n\nIn addition to walking and chatting with neighbors\, one of the goals of the monthly Walk-n-Talk is to explore different neighborhoods in Burien. \n\n\n\nClick on the map below\, then print it out if you’d like it while you’re walking. \n\n\n\nClick on the photos to enlarge them for a better view. \n\n\n\nHamel Stone house at 11650 Roseberg Ave. S. Built in 1945\n\n\n\nDetail of the Hamel Stone house. Built in 1945. Note the “cut stone” blocks alternating with the “round pebble” blocks.\n\n\n\nNote the “cut stone” blocks alternating with the “round pebble” blocks.\n\n\n\nEven the mailbox of the Hamel house on Roseberg Ave. S. is decorated to mimic the house.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMulticolored\, stone block house at 2434 S. 116th Way. Built in 1934. This one is quite different from the others\, yet very interesting in its architectural traits.\n\n\n\nStone house at 2203 S. 118th St. Built in 1945.\n\n\n\nDetail of Stone house at 2203 S. 118th St. This house has some of the same characteristics as the house on Roseberg Ave. S.\, and was built in the same year\, 1945. They’re just a block away from each other and must have been built by the same person(s).\n\n\n\nDetail of Stone house at 2203 S. 118th St. Note the full abalone shells embedded into the concrete!\n\n\n\nAlong the way\, we can be amused by all the “crossing signs” we find:  \n\n\n\n\nHorse crossing\, Donkey crossing\, Doberman crossing\, Great dane crossing.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLet’s cross the Peter Western Bridge!\n\n\n\nThe Peter Western Bridge in northeastern Burien was damaged in February of 2017\, subsequently rebuilt\, and reopened on December 21\, 2020. He married Olive Avenell in Nov.\, 1911\, and fathered three children: John Henry Western (1912-1978)\, Donald Hovel Western (1916-1993)\, and William Avenell Western (1918-1988). Western resided at 11837 25th Ave S.\, and his son Donald appears to have lived at 2400 S. 118th\, which is near the bridge. One was my sister’s home at 11650 Roseberg Avenue South. That was so wonderful because she loved her home and wanted so many to appreciate it. She was ill with Ovarian Cancer at the time; she died on May 1. On the tour day she was at home and came out to her front porch to talk to the folks who came by. She also had a beautiful garden\, which she was thrilled to talk about. I want you to know that it was one of her last fabulous days. She loved attention (and deserved it) and that day she got it.“ \n\n\n\nFor further information\, please contact Maureen at info@wabiburien.org. \n\n\n\nPeter Western portrait and bridge photos courtesy of the B-Town Blog. SUMMARY:Fundraiser for family of the late Justin Cline will be Sunday\, Mar. 17
DESCRIPTION:Itto’s in the West Seattle Junction is rallying support for the family of the late Justin Cline through a fundraiser and auction scheduled for this Sunday\, March 17\, 2024 at the West Seattle Eagles Club. \nThe event aims to provide assistance to Cline’s wife\, Ann\, and their children in the wake of his passing. \nThe suggested donation for dinner is $30. \nClose friend Lacey Comstock\, deeply affected by the tragic loss\, urges the community to participate in this charitable effort. \n“We are all devastated for her and the kids\,” Comstock said. Notably\, the fundraiser is specifically designated to support Ann and the children\, distinct from the operations of the Full Tilt business. \nComstock emphasizes the importance of spreading the word\, underscoring the personal connection to the family. “Justin and Ann are very good friends of mine\,” Comstock shared\, inviting others to join in extending support during this challenging time. \nAs we previously reported\, Cline – the iconic founder/owner of Full Tilt Ice Cream – died on Mar. 2 from complications he suffered from a heart attack on Feb. 5. \nFor more information on the fundraiser\, please contact Khalid at 206-226-3184.

SUMMARY:WABI Weekday Walkers will walk Walker Preserve on Wednesday\, Mar. 20
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \n\n\n\nAll are invited to join the WABI Weekday Walkers for a scenic forest walk this coming Wednesday\, Mar. 20\, 2024 starting at 9 a.m. in Walker Preserve\, a little-known gem in Normandy Park. \nWe’ll follow the trail as it winds through the preserve and down side-trails to Miller and Walker creeks. Hopefully we’ll spot some of the early-blooming trillium along the way. The total distance is about 1.6 miles\, with moderate down-and-up hills on the side-trails. You may want to bring hiking poles to assist with balance. Parking is in a small lot at the corner of 2nd Ave SW and SW 171st\, with additional street parking nearby. \nWHEN: Wednesday\, Mar. 20\, 2024; meet 5-10 minutes before 9 a.m. so we can start walking at 9 a.m. \nWHERE: Walker Preserve\, Normandy Park (map below). \nDIRECTIONS: From Burien\, drive south on 1st Ave S and turn west on SW 171st St (in Normandy Park). (You will see a small sign pointing to Cove and City Hall.) Take the first right at 2nd Ave SW. Parking is in a small lot immediately on the right and also along the street. \nFun facts: Is it Miller Creek or Walker Creek? Both! The creek you cross on the footbridge is Walker Creek\, but the creek you can catch glimpses of from the Walker Preserve trail is actually Miller Creek\, the same creek that comes out at the Normandy Park Cove. Miller and Walker Creeks run roughly parallel at this point\, and Walker Preserve is mostly on a ridge between the two creeks. For a look at the complicated hydrology of these stream basins\, check out King County’s map. For a fun photo tour of the two creeks\, look at King County’s website: Miller Creek and Walker Creek. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpdate from the City of Normandy Park:\n\n\n\n “If you have some birders\, they might like to bring binoculars. There is a chance of hearing / seeing the barred owls\, western tanager\, or pileated woodpeckers that live in the preserve. They are often active during the day. Also\, please remind your walkers that there are no restroom facilities at or near the Preserve.  \n\n\n– Scott Salzer\, Normandy Park Resident & Birder \n\n\n\n\n\nIntentions for WABI Burien’s Weekday Walks:“Encourage active living to support physical and mental health.” (Part of Burien’s “Vision”).\nInitiate conversation between friends and neighbors\, new and old.\n\n\n\n\nFor further information\, please jot us a note: info@wabiburien.org.

SUMMARY:Northwest Associated Arts will celebrate 40 years with ‘Ruby Showcase’ on Saturday\, Mar. 23
DESCRIPTION:Emerge from the Big Dark with music in your heart – join Northwest Associated Arts for a special 40th anniversary concert\, “Ruby Showcase\,” featuring the singers of ChoralSounds NW accompanied by the Northwest Symphony Orchestra on Saturday\, Mar. 23\, 2024. \nShowcasing the incredible solo and small ensemble voices from ChoralSounds NW\, you’ll hear music from the 1980s to commemorate the chorus’ inauguration\, plus R&B classics and modern hits. \nImmerse yourself in the art of storytelling with the surround sound of an orchestra at the Renton Ikea Performing Arts Center! \n“I am so excited to celebrate 40 years of song and community connection with this anniversary concert! Ruby Showcase is an entirely new format for an NWAA event and I am thrilled to bring it to the lovely Renton Ikea Performing Arts Center\,” said Dr. Ryan Ellis\, executive director of NWAA and artistic director of ChoralSounds NW. \nIt may seem easier to connect today – with text\, Zoom\, and TikTok – than it was 40 years ago. And yet\, a 2023 report from the U.S. Surgeon General found that across age groups\, people are spending less time with each other than two decades ago and it’s impacting public health. In a post-pandemic and increasingly war-torn world\, it’s clear in-person connection and community is needed more than ever. Organizations like NWAA create spaces where chosen families are built and connection is experienced as a body\, not just a mind. Spaces that transcend the divides and structures of work and religion foster the bonds of community while serving and respecting people of all ages\, cultures\, and ethnic groups. \n“I joined ChoralSounds while still wading through the challenges of COVID…it felt like a leap of faith. In the two years since then\, I’ve been re-energized\, I’m prioritizing what makes me happy\, and I’ve found an amazing community of talented and caring people\,” said Nikki Salansky\, ChoralSounds NW soprano. “We’ve challenged each other\, laughed together\, cried together and dazzled each other with what we can do. Being a part of this community makes my heart so full and I feel so alive.” \nDr. Ellis added: \n“There is a heart to this group of folks. And while membership changes\, that heart and passion for communal music remains. There’s a strong drive for artistic growth among these singers while knowing that we have a chance to share messages of hope\, healing\, and connection with our audiences.” \nTickets\nTickets are $25 for General Admission and FREE for those 17 & under accompanied by a paying adult. \nThe live concert will be held at the Renton Ikea Performing Arts Center (map below). \nPurchase tickets online by clicking below or at the door. \nhttps://btt.boldtypetickets.com/events/142966164/choralsounds-northwest-ruby-showcase\nVisit nwassociatedarts.org/concerts to see the full anniversary season concert list.
