SUMMARY:May Day Vigil for homeless will be Wednesday at Burien City Hall
DESCRIPTION:WHEEL/Women in Black will be holding a May Day Vigil for homeless people who’ve died from 5-6 p.m. tonight – Wednesday\, May 1\, 2024 – outside Burien City Hall. \n“Please join us in honoring and remembering Burien homeless people who’ve died\, and in calling for compassion and justice for the homeless people of Burien\,” organizers said. \nIn the year 2000\, WHEEL – a grassroots organizing effort of homeless women – founded Women in Black vigils where they stand vigil whenever homeless people died outside\, in public\, or by violence in King County. \nAttendees usually stand vigil at Seattle City Hall\, though they’ve done many other vigils and rituals in the name of Women in Black over the years. \nOn May Day (Wednesday\, May 1\, 2024)\, they’re sponsoring a one-hour silent vigil from 5-6 p.m. outside Burien City Hall to support the Burien homeless community\, and to build community ties with them and their supporters. \n“Last year\, at least seven people died without shelter in Burien\,” organizers said. “At least four people have perished already this year\, one just last Saturday. Burien has NO homeless shelters within City limits\, continues to delay creating shelters\, and passed the most cruel and onerous Camping Ban in the County – one so onerous and unconstitutional that even the King County Sheriff’s Office will not enforce it.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information: \n\nWHEEL:\n\n206-956-0334\nwheelorg@yahoo.com\nhttp://www.wheelforwomen.org\nHomeless Remembrance Project on Facebook

SUMMARY:Learn how our area spawned the ‘Men in Black’ at Highline Heritage Museum event on Saturday\, May 4
DESCRIPTION:Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau will be presenting “UFO Northwest” – the true 1947 story of how Washington State spawned the original ‘Men in Black’ – on Saturday\, May 4\, 2024\, from 2-4 p.m.\, featuring Steve Edmiston. \nEdmiston\, known for writing and producing the award-winning\, locally produced and shot “The Maury Island Incident” short film\, brings a unique\, historic perspective to this intriguing topic. \nHere’s more from Humanities Washington: \n“On August 1\, 1947\, the tragic crash of a B-25 bomber in Washington State triggered an FBI investigation of ‘The Maury Island Incident‘—an infamous Northwest UFO sighting\, and history’s first alleged encounter with the so-called ‘Men in Black.’ \n“The FBI’s records from 1947\, which were sealed for decades\, reveal Cold War fears\, jurisdictional disputes\, cover-ups\, false confessions\, a courageous FBI Special Agent\, and the hands-on involvement of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover.  \n“Relying on the FBI records\, this talk exposes a Washington story that shapes our current UFO narratives\, from 1950’s pulp magazines to the ubiquitous X-Files and Men in Black film franchises. Also examined: how the Northwest’s unique position in UFO history is challenged by others that assert contradictory narratives.” \nMore info here: \nhttps://highlinemuseum.org\n\n\n\nTo prepare for this event\, you might want to view the full film\, which can be viewed at the link below: \nhttps://mauryislandincident.com

SUMMARY:Finalé performance of BAT Theatre’s intense 'Red' is Sunday\, May 5
DESCRIPTION:The finalé performance of Burien Actors Theatre (BAT) Red\, written by John Logan\, will be Sunday\, May 5\, 2024. \nThis Tony Award-winning play is an intense two-actor knockout that takes us into the mind of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko\, for whom paintings are “pulsating” life forces. \nRaw and provocative\, but peppered with humor\, Red chronicles the painter’s two-year labor to complete a lucrative set of murals for Manhattan’s exclusive Four Seasons restaurant. When Rothko’s young assistant\, Ken\, gains the confidence to challenge him\, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility his crowning achievement could also become his undoing. \nThe show contains some strong language and mature themes. BAT’s policy is to inform audiences of content\, but to allow individuals to make decision they feel are appropriate for themselves or the youth and teens in their care. \nPerformances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.\, and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. (except no performance Sunday\, April 28) in the Theater at Kennedy Catholic High School\, 140 S. 140th St.\, Burien\, WA 98168 (map below). \nThe show runs approximately 95 minutes with no intermission. \nThere is plenty of free on-site parking. \nMasks are required at all performances\, and will be provided by BAT if you don’t have one. \n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\nTicket prices range from $7 to $25. Student tickets are $5. If ticket pricing is a barrier\, reach out to BAT at Tickets@BATtheatre.org – theater is for everyone! \nFor tickets and details\, go to www.BATtheatre.org or call 206-242-5180 (message only). Red is sponsored by 4Culture through the King County Lodging Tax and the City of Burien. \n\n\n\n$3 Off Coupon\nSave $3 by using the code “BLOG” when ordering online here. \n\n\n\nThe Cast\, Director and Designers \n\n\n\nStage director Beau Prichard directs the talented cast of Scott C. Brown (Mark Rothko) and Seamus C. Smith (Ken)\, along with Michael Mendonsa (understudy Mark Rothko) and Colin Madison (understudy Ken). Cyndi Baumgardner is the show’s stage manager. The rest of the creative team for the show includes: Jacob Viramontes\, lighting design; Rochelle-Ann Graham\, costume design; Cyndi Baumgardner\, props design; and Maggie Larrick\, set design. \n\n\n\nAbout BAT Theatre \n\n\n\nExciting live theater has been a tradition in Burien since 1955. Incorporated in 1980\, BAT Theatre is a leading producer of quality live theater serving residents of the Puget Sound region. BAT gives audiences an intriguing and invigorating theater experience with unusual productions. The theater’s mission is to “welcome and embrace our shared humanity through live theater. SUMMARY:Mural Masters fundraising party is Saturday night\, May 18
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to enjoy an evening in downtown Burien with a view of the Art Alley this Saturday night\, May 18\, 2024 with special guests Massive Monkees and Fever One behind the decks. \n\n\n\nThis fundraiser party will be held from 6:30–11 p.m. at Humble Hall (map below). \n\n\n\nMural Masters is an annual graffiti/street art festival held in Burien’s Art Alley since 2014. This year they will be hosting over 18 local and national/international artists to transform The Art Alley and some adjacent walls with stunning large-scale murals\, spanning diverse styles and disciplines. Our mission is to cultivate inclusive community spaces\, deter graffiti\, and foster economic growth through the celebration of urban artistry. \n\n\n\nThis year’s event’s objective is to celebrate diverse styles of large-scale urban art and honor the artists behind them. Through the application of art on buildings\, we not only deter graffiti but also cultivate community\, knowledge\, and joy within Burien. Mural Masters serves as a catalyst for tourism and economic growth\, embodying our commitment to inclusivity by spotlighting artists from communities of color\, women\, and the LGBTQ+ community. While we welcome international and national artists\, we prioritize local talent\, providing spaces for the voices of Burien and neighboring communities. \n\n\n\nThis year\, we will also host an art market\, kids hands-on projects\, older kids and adult art wall\, a live dj\, some b-boy/b-girl battles\, a black book session on Friday evening and an artist panel addressing the evolution of the graffiti art form on Saturday evening. \n\n\n\nThe festival’s main public venue\, the Art Alley\, situated on SW 152nd Alley between 4th Ave SW and Ambaum Blvd SW\, serves as a central hub for Mural Masters. \n\n\n\nBesides driving down The Art Alley the murals can be viewed from Ambaum\, 6th Ave SW\, 4th Ave SW and SW 153rd Street. \n\n\n\nIt is integral to our mission to make art accessible to all. We work to ensure free public all-ages participation. We aim to fortify Burien’s art community by demystifying the mural-making process and inviting spectators to witness its creation and to learn and contribute in their own way. We believe neighborhoods should mirror their inhabitants. One way is to use mural art to reflect community identity created by artists who represent the diversity embodied in Burien. \n\n\n\nThe Mural Masters event provides Burien community members of all ages opportunities to participate in the creative act\, making art and meeting artists at no cost in public spaces. This is the ultimate form of accessibility. \n\n\n\nAlong with making art accessible to the public\, the Mural Masters Invitational sets aside walls for emerging artists and builds free-standing panels for student graffiti artists. We believe in supporting all levels of artists. \n\n\n\nBringing Stupid Fresh Art to Burien\n\n\n\n“Join us at Mural Masters 2024 Invitational Fundraiser at Humble Hall for an unforgettable evening of graffiti + Mural art\, live painting by SNEKE\, SERIF + 179\, music\, and community\,” organizers said. “Special Guests include Massive Monkees with Fever One behind the decks. Food by Centro Neighborhood Kitchen.” \n\n\n\nYour ticket purchase directly supports the transformation of Burien’s Art Alley\, fostering economic growth\, and celebrating diverse artistic voices. \n\n\n\n“We need YOUR support to make this a reality!” \n\n\n\nTicket sales: https://bit.ly/4bgykPI \n\n\n\n\nSupporter $50\n\n\n\nArtist $25 \n\n\n\nVIP $150\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT: Enjoy an evening at Humble Hall\, adjacent to Burien’s Art Alley with special guests including the OG stylings of the Massive Monkees with Fever One behind the decks. Food by Centro Neighborhood Kitchen. Live painting by 179\, Sneke and Serif. The works will sold off at the end of the evening.
